Re: Rebuild Vent Windows

This place also sells the vent assemblies already rebuilt, kind of pricey. But anyways, I contacted them, and they will do your actual vents. They said they would minus some of the money off that cost, especially if they can reuse some of your parts. (like the glass itself & etc).

I'm strongly considering buying all the parts needed and rebuilding my own. Most of my stuff in real good shape, it's just the seals & such.

Thanks! I've contacted Precision Parts so I'll see what they say. That price really isn't that bad but I'm hoping to pay a couple hundred plus parts. Guess we'll see.

Re: Rebuild Vent Windows

Precision wants 175.00 each window. That includes all new gaskets, hardware, windows and recondition everything else. I think that's an awesome deal. I think I'll just do that. I'll give an update when I get them back.

Re: Rebuild Vent Windows

That sounds a lot better than USA1. Maybe this winter, when the truck is garaged again, I'll have mine done. Keep us updated, I'm curious of the turn around time too.

I did the same thing through Precision. Very happy with final result. Now, if I could just get the driver window to stop whistling.....

Based on what I see, I'm reaching out to get both the 88 Suburban and the 87 K30 Crewcab done.

Enjoy,

Get ready to use some black silicon! I rebuilt with precision seals. Good quality seals, but you'll be dealing with plenty of wind noise until you bust out the silicon.

Really? What did they do/didn't do that is causing it to whistle? Where are you putting the silicone?

I've said this before, here on this site. I'll not argue the quality of the Precision brand seals. So far, the quality and durability, and overall resistance to the elements, of the Precision seals, looks great. But they don't fit. They just don't. Hold up your factory seals next to them, and tell me you don't notice a difference. They're about 3, maybe 4 times thicker. You can't do that and have them fit right.

That said, its not a deal breaker, you're just going to have to use some black silicon. Every time I say this the Precision rep sends me a private message or asks me here in the thread to PM him, which I won't do. We're talking about it out here in the open in front of everyone, or not at all.

You won't be able to see the silicon, just peel back the outer "layer" of the seal, lay down your silicon, and then let that layer fold back over to where it sits naturally. It will cover up the bead of silicon.

Re: Rebuild Vent Windows

Well it might be a deal breaker for me, i don't care how nice they look (well maybe a little). But my main goal here is to cut down on the windnoise, and you'll get a lot of comments about that it's the vent windows causing this and they need rebuilt/restored to minimize the noise.

Between the seal and the door itself?

I'd convert to the one piece windows before I sealed them shut.

Yes. You can peel back the outer part, silicon the seal to the door, and then let go of the outer part. The outer part will then just bend back to where its supposed to be, and cover up what you just siliconed. I've gotten rid of most of my road noise that way. But there is still some left on my truck, just gotta track it all down, and have been lazy lately.

That said, I didn't do a full rebuild of the windows, cause I just didn't feel like mine looked like they needed it. Is there an actual rebuild kit somewhere for them? That might help, but I really don't see how. Rebuilding them isn't going to make the seals somehow fit better. Precision seals are definitely not the original GM seals. Unless they were somehow the original supplier, and changed their tooling or something a long time ago. I really wish we still had access to those old ones. Back when my town still had a chevy dealership, I went and got some new seals from them. They were just the Precision seals, in a GM plastic bag. Exact same seals I ordered online. But they were not what came off of my truck. Not by a long shot.

I've got nothing against Precision, I think their stuff is great quality. Sorry if all this sounds kind of negative. But I was just pretty irritated at their thickness. It does throw a new variable into the repair.

In the end, this might actually be the best idea. The vent windows aren't all that great, only reason I kept mine is because I wanted the old look of the truck. But it would eliminate a whole lot of hassle and wind noise, for sure.

Re: Rebuild Vent Windows

I would think as long as it keeps the rain out, allows you to open and close the window and enjoy a vent windows going down the road on the one day when it's actually better to. Use the vent window vs. rolling down the full window or running the AC, it will be worth a small bead of silicon down the front edge where after the seal rolls back over cant be seen anyway.

Being someone that was 18yrs of age in 1982, the only time I can really remember using these windows was when we smoked going down the road and holding the cigarette up to it when it was barely cracked anyway. Since I don't smoke, guess I won't be using them for that reason anymore.

Enjoy,
