A newb from Los Angeles...this forum is great!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and the world of Chevy. I have never worked on cars or trucks, but plan on starting with this 1972 C20 Cheyenne Super I just purchased. I will have many questions as time goes on but in the mean time I was wondering if I could get some help with my rust problem. I live in Los Angeles and need someone to work on the rust above my windshield. Any one have any suggestions? Check out the photots.

Welcome to the board. Since you do have a Cheyenne Super I take it you have a pickup. There have been some post written on fixing this problem that you have. Since this is the Suburban forum I will move you over to the pickup forum for you.

I can't attest to it, but lots of folks swear by it: POR-15
I picked some up at the Good Guys last Sat. Just haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Be patient. There will be tons of folks here that will chime in & give you their advice.

Welcome to the board neighbor! So Cal inland empire area my self.

You might want to take some of the paint back to see how bad it is under there. Also take the drip molding caulk out to see how bad it actually is. Seems to be a pretty easy fix thou.

Welcome from a northern neighbor. definitely like he says - depending on your plans for the truck. If it's a beater, don't know if you'd want tackle that unless you got lots of time. If it's something you really want to restore, depending on the condition fo the rest of the cab, you may want to look for another one (cab). There's lots of decent cabs in South Cal.

my hope is to gradually restore it, but i felt like I needed to take care of that hole before it gets worse.

jegs72-sounds good. my fam is in SD. east san diego and north. what area do u live?

mine is solid green with a white top. i am still learning about my truck.

Yep I agree with the others first get that old caulking out and see just how bad it is. Then post more pics so we can give better advice but a new cab may be in order since most of the rust on these trucks start from the inside and work their way out.

Welcome to the board. Can you post a pic showing your entire truck? How are your cab corners and the floor. That rust has probably led to alot more rust in other places from the water traveling inside the cab and down - sure might be better off with a new cab.

I think I will try to work on the caulking this weekend. I literally know nothing about how to work on cars, so i will wing it this weekend. I will read some of the other threads on how to remove the caulking and drip rail.

I am going to post some pictures of the truck to get some advice on weather its' worth it to do the work or purchase a new cab or even a new truck.

LEARNING!!! Hopefully not the hard way.

I started working on my truck when I was around 13 - had no clue whatsoever what I was doing, had never worked on a car before, and had to find out for myself which way to turn a wrench to loosen/tighten it. I had a little help from my dad, but I passed him up in skill within a year or two. The more time I spent working on it and on this forum, the more I learn and still continue to learn to this day. Be careful, these things are addictive! There is always more you can do and more to know.

If not for my truck, I certainly wouldn't be as "handy" as I am today. Had I not started working on it, when the garbage disposal went out, i'd probably be calling a repair man.

I agree, I think you are going to want to find a new cab - but just about anything is repairable with enough patience, skill, and money.

your so right this can and is very addicting.

It seems a little intimidating to think about changing out my whole cab. If I had a huge space to work on the truck and time. I think it would be a great project. But since I limited in my time and knowledge I though it might be quicker to have it repaired, but what I am hearing is in the long run it might be better to replace the cab depending on how much damage is hiding. I guess i won't know what to do until i really find out how much damage the cab really has.

I really appreciate everyones help.
