Starting 283/700r4 marriage

I am going to be starting my build soon on my 66 stepper. Looking to build a frwy cruiser that has old school look under the hood with some modern add-ons.

I know it's been done but can't seem to find 283/700r4 projects.

Plan is also to bag, not notch. Lowered with a nice ride for the wife (and me)

A/C and drop disc (6 lug) in front.

Any input or brands to use or NOT to use on bags and disc kits are welcome as well as engine/trans marriage.

Gathering pieces and parts now. A pic because I know we love some pictures on here.

I had a 283 with manual peanut in my 64. It was grand and with a good tune got 15 mpg plus with the 2 bbl. I can only imagine how nice a 283 and OD automatic is gonna be. Awesome combo.

Lets double check the performance of this combo before you dive into it. send me the info on your truck, i.e. rear axle ratio, and tire diameter in inches, along with your e mail address and I will send you a spreadsheet that shows torque to the ground and speeds at 1500, 2000, 3000 rpm. By checking first we can make sure the truck does not fall on its face in OD.......Kieth

I' m thinking of doing this also . I picked up a 63 with a 283, 3ott with a3.73 rearend. I would think a 700r4 would be great with this combination running a 28" tire.

believe it or not in od your vehicles will not perform that much differently:

ratio----------tire diam----------speed at 2000 rpm---torque to ground

3.08-----------24"----------------------68mph------------460ft lbs

3:08-----------30"---------------------83mph-------------368ft lbs*

3:73-----------28"----------------------64mph------------477ft lbs

they will both work cruising at highway speeds in OD, they will not be power houses but they will cruise along at low rpm, when you hit a hill you will have to downshft. Kieth

*ps be careful with the 3:08's, do not go to larger diameter wheels and tires
the truck will not have enough torque available ......it will fall on its face

My truck has about 465 ft lbs of torque and it does what I want it to do, but I am installing a 300 hp engine this winter so it is better able to handle rolling terrain..... torque goes to 659ft lbs of torque
