307 or 327? Newbie question!

I am trying to figure out what the CID is for the engine in my 68 1/2 ton, Long Step that I just got home this afternoon. I assume it has a 307 in it, since a 307 was standard for 68. Would a 327 show up on the glovebox sticker?

I have been told that I need to check the stamping on the rear of the block, near the tranny. Are there other ways to confirm which engine I have, that don't require pulling the engine?

I am going to be needing points/plugs and the like soon, and I want to make sure I get stuff for the correct engine.

I would say that if the truck had a 327 from GM in it then it would say it on the sticker. I thought I saw that on a post around here not that long ago. If you get the casting number off of the back of the engine right around the bellhousing on the driver side and to go www.mortec.com that would tell you.

Another option for you is to read the right front engine pad codes, (assuming the block has not been decked). If you look up the suffix code from the pad you can get the engine information from this site:

Ok, I need some help here. I'm much more familiar with passenger car Chevy engines. I know if it were a 68 car engine it would have to be a 327 because If I remeber right, they didn't make the 307 until 69. Also, is the 307 in a truck the same 307 that is in passenger cars? I also know the 327 was replaced with a 350 in 69 in cars, are trucks the same?

You know the truck has the original engine, right? If so, and the VIN starts with CE and the glovebox does not list an engine RPO, it's a 307, that simple. Also the manual choke is a clue too. In 68, 4bbl engines (327 & 396) had auto chokes and a cool choke delete on the gauge cluster. Your carb is a 2 bbl with a manual choke, right? If so, its another clue pointing to 307.

FYI, the 307 replaced the 289 in 68 as the base V8. The 350 repolaced the 327 in 69 as the optional small block. I'd like to see more pics of your truck, I've been following this with interest. Good engine for a driver IMO, but I'd still rather have an inline!

Thanks for the good info. This is right along my line of thinking, too. So we must be right! Right?

Manual choke, yes, 2BBL, yes.

I think we have a winner. 307 it is, until I am proven wrong.

70 shorty, I have seen the same about 307, but it might have been when I was looking at car sites. Showing the 307 as base for 69 is part of my confusion.

JimKshortstep4x4, any clues about where to look on the front? The wire brush and I spent much of the afternoon under the truck, looking for any stampings or codes we could find. I could not find the right front engine pad codes (And sorry for the stupidity, but I don't know what "decked" means- but since this was a simple farm truck. And my grandpa was cheap. I doubt it has.

The 327 was offered in cars in 69 as well as the 350 and the 350 was avaiable in 67 at least in the Camaro as I have owed or worked on both. Is the 307 the same in a car or truck I don't know but I have heard rumors that some 307s would stand a 4 inch bore. I would have tryed that on my original motor(in my 72) if I would have had time as I like 3.25 stroke motors. The 350 at the time was just cheaper and faster for me.

Did you look for the casting number in the back on the drivers side?

The engine code is on a machined pad just under the right front end of the passenger side head.

i had a similar deal with my 67, glove box options stated 327 but after some research i found i had 307. it all looked so factory i would never have figured the motor wasn't original. also the truck vin and motor codes made me think the 307 couldn't have came from the factory.
