Sanden 508 oil?

Hi all, I have my sanden compressor mounted sideways keeping in line with the instructions of keeping the oil plug 90* or above. When I opened the discharge side to connect the hose some oil leaked out, is this ok? I know this is the LSX Swap forum but a lot of folks use the sanden for the swap so I thought I would ask here.

My only exposure to that thing has been using one as an Engine Driven Compressor for a bag setup. Any new compressor will pass oil during break-in, so a small amount is probably pretty normal. Are you using the correct PAG?

Pass oil? Refrigerant system circulate oil. Always. A little spillage is OK, but a used compressor only has about 1/3 of the oil needed in the system. The rest is scattered out among the components. The factory normally puts 1/2 the oil in the compressor and 1/2 the oil in the accumulator or receiver.

Thanks for the responses all. Brew, I don't know what PAG is, can you explain? This is a new compressor and the factory already put the oil in it and it stated directly on it to NOT add oil.

I think you skipped the part where I use them as EDC's. You don't WANT oil in your air for bags etc, and the idea is to lubricate without passing (yes passing) the oil too far into the system. EDC's don't use PAG since no refrigeration is in place, they use something like straight 30. In my case, its not a loop, there is no recirc, so circulating oil can't happen at all. It was for that reason I specifically mentioned that I've not used them normally as AC compressors.

PAG is the type of oil that refrigerant systems take. If its already full, you shouldn't have to add more, unless you lost a large amount (you mentioned some came out). Reason I asked is that when you buy one from a parts store, they dont always come full of oil. There are a few weights (types?) of PAG, and old ass cars used Ester I think.

Sanden has their own PAG oil (SP-15), Available at any Chrysler dealer as Mopar SP-15.

SP-15 has a Viscosity of 80 centistrokes (cst) at 100 degrees, Unfortunately there is not a "PAG-80", Though Pag-100 can be used....But Sanden does NOT condone this!!!!

Refrigerant oil to Refrigerant Ratio.......

Refrigerant charges ranging from 24oz to 40oz
THX expansion valve style.....135cc oil charge. (4.5oz)
Orifice style.........................240cc oil charge. (8oz)
