Paint Code?

Got bored tonight and figured I'd see what the original color of my truck was. On the glove box sticker it says Paint: 4550AD. Did some searching, but couldn't find what I was looking for.... so figured I'd ask the gurus! Can anyone tell me what the original color was??

Re: Paint Code?

Thanks for the reply Shifty, but am I missing something? I already looked at that chart and I do not see my paint code there.

Re: Paint Code?

I think that's normally a 3 digit number in the lower or upper of a code column. If you have difficult show a picture of your Glove box sticker.

Well, here's a pick of my glove box sticker. Sorry for the crappy quality, but my camera sucks! See, right in the "Paint box" it says 4550AD...

Re: Paint Code?

Hey Riveted1, are there any unpainted areas of your truck like the inside like the firewall under the dashor maybe outside the firewall. I can suggest that. The inside of glove box door does not count. Mine is grey like yours and the truck was blue as well as interior trim. Those codes are different from the aftermarket paint manufacturers and not the same as GM's codes. They might need to be crossed over if that is still possible being a chart from then and paint materials being made now. My truck has never been fully repainted so I did find my blue in the pic. Hope you find it, David.

Re: Paint Code?

Based on the VIN, that truck is the 5,728th built at St. Louis. Geeze, that's kinda cool.

Re: Paint Code?

The P.O. did a pretty good job of covering up the old paint. Maybe once I pull some more stuff off I can find something that didn't get shot. I don't plan on painting it the factory color, but was just interested in the truck's history.

Still a little confused as to why that paint code isn't listed...

take two or three of the glovebox screws off the hinge and look at the color of the glovebox lid?

I am going to guess it was 2 tone yellow and white.

That won't work on a '67. The lids were factory silver inside and out, and the interior was painted a different color than the exterior most of the time. The best bet would be to pop the wipers off and take off the cowl.

Re: Paint Code?

Kind of an educated short in the dark guess Autocolorlibrary.com shows in 68 that code 550 was two-2 tone, made up from basic color 81503 and 8290.
If you then go back and look at the 67 colors on that same site you will notice that 81503 is light yellow and 8290 is actually Ivory and not white. The basic colors wouldn't have changed and I don't think that the option code did either for that scheme between those 2 years.

Re: Paint Code?

But the paint code is 4550AD, not 550... I'm so confused! LOL Why wouldn't this paint code be listed? And here I thought I was asking a simple question

Re: Paint Code?

Don't be confused! The middle three are the real option code. Many SPIDS only have just those listed, for example, u63 is the radio, a11 is tinted glass and 550 is the paint code. On your SPID, remove the 4 and the last 2 letters and you are looking at the real option number. If you order restoration packs you will notice that they only have the 3 digit codes listed. I have several old dealer books that also list only the 3 digit code. I have never found out why some start with 1 or 4 or 01 or what the extra letters/numbers mean, somebody probably knows but its never really been cleared up, as far as I know anyway.

Re: Paint Code?

Sweet! That's the clarification I needed Jeff! Now that really makes me curious about the extra number and the letters though. Guess it's time for some more research!

Re: Paint Code?

In case you need to verify that, here is my glove box door:

http://satellitehead.com/gallery/dis...=66&fullsize=1

And '67 and '68 both had same green color on the paint sheet:

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorli...truck-pg01.jpg

4503AA paint color = 503 for paint code = I got a green truck.

Re: Paint Code?

And every paint code I have on the four glove box doors at my house begins with the number '4' and ends with two letters, I think they're all AA and AD.

And here is one that starts with a 1 and also one that has just the 3 numbers. I could show examples of real labels from 67-72 from the same or different factories that are done several ways, again not sure why some are 3 digit and some aren't.

Jeff
I have a small rear window 67 and I got to wondering what my spid tag said so I went out and wrote the codes down since my cam battery is done dead. My paint code is 4506AA. Matching the medium blue POLY on the PPG/Ditzler sheet using the three center numbers. I beg to differ on all the codes being in three's. Here are the rest.
4G60AB Aux. spring
4614AB Blue Vinyl
4C42CA Deluxe Air Heat
4F60EB HD front spring
4G508A HD rear spring
4E81AB pick up box
4B98or3AB side trim

That is all it says. Now how do we tell, Is is from factory that built it that makes them so differrent? Here is where mine was built CE147J145351. Janesville Indiana. Tell me how YOU know. Cool, tell more everyone, David

I know they are 3 digit codes because I have GM data (see scanned image from 67) from all 6 years (67-72) that lists them that way. As I said earlier I do not know why some start with 4 or 1 or 04 or end in letters or numbers, I would love to know that info. I do know that the option is a 3 digit number. Thats how I know Dave

Re: Paint Code?

Just messin with ya. Good answer. That's why we are here to figure it out. As you can see they built a few before mine. It is no way a special truck especially in it's condition (body-wise.) It is still cool to know the birthmark of old trucks.
Thanks dude for the know-how. I followed the LMC page to kinda figure mine out. David
