Bleeding Brake Q's

Basic stuff for some, but I have had to replace the brake lines across the rear axle and I am wanting to make sure I got this right.

Is the order... Right Rear, Left front, Left rear and then Right front?

On each bleed is the pedal supposed to be pumped a few times and held down to the floor? Then a quick turn of the bleeder valve on a sec then closed?

Also, this seems wrong but Ive heard from some that for power brakes to actually have the engine running?

The order is furthest away from the master cylinder to the closest. Right rear, left rear, right front, left front.

It will be necessary to have a helper. And yes, have them pump the pedal until there is resistance, then hold. At that point, you need to open the bleeder on whichever brake assembly you are at and let the fluid/air come out, then turn the bleeder back in (closing it). Continue this process on each brake assembly until there is no air, but just a solid stream of brake fluid coming out.

It is not necessary to have the engine running with power brakes.

Make sure whatever you get brake fluid on, you flush off with cleaner or water. Brake fluid does eat paint.

Before you start pumping them up to bleed after you get your lines on open the bleeders and let them gravity bleed first until fluid runs out. This will speed up the pumping process.

for those that know the left rear is the furthest away and done first

then there is the issue of the prop valve on the disc brake units

Thanks for the help! When locations are given it does mean as if you were sitting in the vehicle right? So right rear is passenger side rear wheel?

yes right rear is passenger side and if you take a tape measure and measure the brake lines is how you can really find out which rear brake cylinder is closer to the master cylinder and which is furthest away(left)

But if you don't have help, or would rather not have the only help that is available, or, you would simply like to work alone, you can just let them gravity bleed the whole way....never having to pump.

If done completely, you will have a firm pedal the first time you push it.

For the gravity bleeding to work, does the front of the vehicle need to be elevated, or can it remain level because the brake fluid reservoir is higher than calipers or wheel cylinders? How long does gravity bleeding take?

Did the 2 person method, had the brake pumped 3-4 times and held down then I did a quick open/close till the clear stream with no bubbles travelled down the clear tubing I put on the bleed valve that collected in an empty water bottle.

After measuring the brake lines the order I went was left rear, right rear, right front and then left front. Seemed to work well. It's been a while since I had driven it last so the pressure seemed ok, thought the bleeding might tighten up the tension on the peddle though. The braking feels like it gets tight about 4 inches from the floor then the truck slows down. I did a few 20 mph then stop, then 40-50 mph then a had stop and it stayed straight, no pulling to left or right.

Forgot to mention but I have power disc brakes in front and drums in back.

if you clamp the pin on the combination valve and go thru the procedure one more time or so it should get better
