Vacuum advance problems
1964 with 292 engine - How can I tell if my vacuum advance is working properly???? - I have an HEI system.

Use a vacuum pump from harbor freight or you can pull the vac line and compress the shaft all the way and hold your finger over the hole and see if it moves back. If it hold it is probably ok. Take your cap off and make sure your mech. adv. is also working. Cannot tell you how many cars are running around without this working..

JJ is spot on if you have a vacuum guage / pump. Poor mans way is to connect a timming light up. Hope you have one. Disconnect the vacuum line and rev up the motor to check the mechanical advance. If that advances the timming chech to see how far. Then hook up the vacuum line and rev up the motor again and see how much futher the advance goes. If it goes another 8 degrees past where the mechanical advance goes at least it works.
