Hacked Dash and CD player - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The PO intalled a CD player,and it looks like he cut the dash with visegrips,man it's rough.Anyway,the lines are crooked,and nasty looking.I put my CD player in,and teh trim ring around the edge is not wide enough to hide all the hackage.
Anyone else have this problem,and how did you handle it,other than cutting and welding a new piece in it.?

Pics would be nice also of how you remedied the problem.

Yes, I got an old VHS case "plastic" and made my own trim ring "bigger"

You could also use a radio delete plate instead of plastic.

Good idea but a factory delete plate needs the radio knob holes intact to stay mounted via the clips on the back side.

With some modification's for mounting, it's certainly the right size/look.

Is cutting the dash the best radio mounting option? I've looked into:

-Building a custom console (have a bench and it wouldn't look right)
-Glove Box (it's hard to reach, rattles when open and reduces passenger leg room)
-Custom Autosound (overpriced and never heard much good of it)

Looks like cutting the dash might be in my near future.

GMC67swb that looks awesome. what color is that paint? the plastic really complements it.
has anyone ever tried frenching the radio by making a new panel?

I went to the local stereo shop and asked or a bigger backing plate. It didnt fit, but a little trimming and it hid the dremel trails i happened to cut into the dash.

GMC67SWB, That does look pretty good. How hacked up was your radio panel? How did you secure that front panel? Here's a pic of mine. The PO really tore it up. Think I could do the same thing you did?

Notice how big my plate is? I need every bit of it. It used to have a 3 gauge set-up in it. I think yours will fix!

Mines nearly that bad,I'd like to find that guy,slap him upside the head and say WTF?!?!

what about my frenching idea?
what I plan to do is make a whole new "bucket" to replace the area where the factory indent is, only deeper (to accomodate the radio face depth).
maybe even make a flip down cover plate for security reasons.

Could also do polished aluminum the same way for accent. Good old textured black ABS sheet is SUCH a versatile material......great job of finding it without buying a sheet though....looks good!

GREAT THREAD!!! mine was hacked by the FPO, not as bad as some of these, but sorry looking never the less... At least I have enough sheet metal left to hold a DIN chassis!

I think there must have been a fire in the radio and the fire dept hacked it out with an axe. I have a patch panel cut under dash pad then cut a cluster and glove box. Very little welded area will actually be exposed once installed.

Yeah my CD player will stay in the dash,but it is but hope,and by golly.It's just there,and I'm not sure how.Hopefully I can get around to fixing it this weekend.

I saw somwhere on this board where a guy took a radio delete cover and hid the CD player behind it. The delete plate was hinged on the bottom and looked origional. I tried to find it in search, but no luck.

yeah, I always wanted to do the delete plate on a hinge thiung, but there's a few things I haven't worked out...like how will it stay closed. I don't really want to place a magnet by my CD player. Also wonder where to find a hinge that'll work and be out of site.
