86 TH-400/NP205 Set Up, Question
I am looking at possibly buying a TH-400/NP205 setup out of a one ton 4x4. It is an 86 Chevrolet truck and I want to know if the setup is the same as the 69-72 transmission/transfer case combo.
Any opinions on the setup good or bad? Jim |

That is the strongest automatic and t-case combo that GM ever made until the new Allison. If you can pick it up at a decent price, do not hesitate. All of the automatic transmissions used with NP205s in 4WD trucks in the '67 - '72 era were TH350s.

The NP205 that is used with a TH400 has a 32 spline female input. The version that is used with a TH350 has a 27 spline male input shaft. The 32 spline female input shaft uses a bearing that has a larger OD than the other versions (TH350 and the 10 spline male input that is used with the SM465), so the case has a larger bore to accommodate this input shaft. The adapter between the transmission and the t-case is also different for the TH400 vs. the TH350.

NAW its no good, if you send it down here to Ohio I will dispose of it for you Just kidding. Yeah I would go for it it is about the best set up you can get. I would have to see the allison and what ever transfercase used with it last for 20-30 years before I would compare. Those 205s are almost bullet proof. Anyone know what a seperate hung 205 goes for I just picked one up last night for $200. Now I just have to figure out what I am going to do with it.

Until Blazer 70 pointed it out, I never realized that the TH400 setup did not come in any of the 67-72 trucks. We have (5) of the
71-72 4x4 trucks and one has the 400 transmisssion 205 combo and the rest are TH 350 with the Np 205. Now we know that the 400 did not come in the 72 that has one. We always wondered why the side mount on the NP 205 would not bolt up to any of the hole patterns in the frame. Thanks for the disposition offer 694x4! We will probably hang on to the tranny. If we run accross another one, do you want to know about it? Jim |

the adapter for the th400 to np 205 is really, really hard to find, so yea, it's worth it. If you find more, buy them and sell them on e-bay or something. lol (you could send me one too... )

Last time I checked that adapter is still available new from GM, not an inexpensive piece though. 4X Heaven has a better price. Used setups can be a bit scarce but they are around. I do know that the 350/205 splined adapter sleeve is not available new from GM. Lastly here is a short thread relating to this combo. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...threadid=33702

The splined sleeve is available from GM , but only the 70 and up sleeve. The 69 sleeve is NLA. You can convert to the newer sleeve.
It is cheaper to go to 4xheaven (800-800-1679) for the sleeve. $70 from them and around $140 from GM. Randy

First- The 400/205 is the strongest auto setup out there
Second- It will fit a 67-72 with mods to the location of the trans crossmember (easy, slide it back and drill new holes) and mods to the driveshafts (front gets longer, rear gets shorter). I would get the driveshafts from the 1 ton along with the tranny/t-case, take all the shafts to your local driveline guy with some measurements and he will make you just what you need
