grill trim

When I redid my truck, I wanted to get new grill trim, so the shop ordered it and put it on, now there are gaps between the pieces (expansion and contraction I believe) and I don't really like the look of the stuff anymore.

Now to the point..... on my dad's 81 the grill trim is smooth and flat...unlike my 86 where it is raised up and looks like cheep metal. I was wondering if you can still get the same stuff from the 81 style? if anyone knows what I'm talking about could you put a pic on here to clarify. Thanks
