68 3/4 ton New

I was going thru some old pics this week and came across the pic of my dads new 68. He bought it in Spfld, Mo. in late feb. 1968. Drove it 50 miles home to his farm. This was his very first New truck so my mom took a pic when he got home with it. It was jst a plain jane 3/4 ton with 4 speed. Only options he wanted was radio and heater. They kept the ole girl (well used) until 1993.

Re: 68 3/4 ton New

It was a good truck. My Dad took care of it mechanically only. The first three years he had it were rough. He had a tall wooden stock rack and he hauled cows in it frequently. During those years he had about 15-20 hogs as well and he used the truck to haul open 55 gal. barrels of Whey (an acidic by product of making cheese) from the local cheese plant. The splashing of that stuff caused some severe rust in the bed.
My Dad died in 85 and I don't think the truck was started more than a few times when my mom loaned it to neighbors occasionally during the last few years that she had it.
She sold the truck at auction when she moved to town, I don't remember what it sold for but I do remember the bidding was intense as many people in that small community knew my dad.

That's probably a picture of a picture. Also, Cameras weren't as high tech as they are now. But anyway, that's a cool truck and a great story. Thanks for sharing

The picture that you see was taken in 1968. I scanned the picture into my computer. Im not sure what type of camera it was, but I can tell you it was prob. a cheap one. My folks didn't waste a lot of money on anything that wasn't necessary.

Really cool that you have a picture like that. I wish I had more pics of my parents and grandparents from back in the day.

That's a really cool pic. It could double for a publicity pic from 68'. It has just the right amount of background features that shows the truck is a worker. Love it.

Re: 68 3/4 ton New

I looked at the pic in a different light this morning. I too see that this setting is something that advertizers might really like. I originally posted it so that it might bring some memories to other Older members (lol). But remember that in 68 we as a society weren't concerned with nostalgia--we were all pretty much concerned in those days with being progressive, we were interested in more and better. Its just the way things were then.
In any case, Im glad the pic has been thought provoking -- and even though my dad was a simple hard working man--I think he would be pleased with others seeing the pic.

Great picture.Bib overalls, denim jacket and a hat. That's what a hard working man looked like in the day. Our neighbor hauled whey from town for his hogs too.Man I wished I had one like that of my Dad.
