Starter problems! Again!!!!

So since I've ha my 64 running I've already gone thru 4 starters counting today! It's only been on the on the road since November. Im thinking it's the flywheel? It would grind sometimes but other times it statrs fine. But the last two starters have gone out after only starting the truck literally 4-5 times! Im ready to take the tranny out tomorrow morning thinking the flywheel may be damaged in some way that I can't see from underneath. What ideas do you guys have?I usually rebuild my starters and never have issues but today I went with a new starter cuz I'm pretty fed up with this issue ESP so close to the cpp show!! Any ideas ?

Re: Starter problems! Again!!!!

bolt the starter up with the soleniod off, pull the plunger back and engage the drive into the flywheel. between the teeth of the starter drive and the teeth of the flywheel should be an 1/8 clearance.. this is the clearance between the point of the teeth on the drive and the valley of the teeth of the flywheel. use shims available at the parts store, usually comes in a bag with a new starter, to set this.... sometimes you will need to remove instead of add thickness to the nosecone of the starter. do this with a flat file. use an 1/8 drill bit or large paper clip

Re: Starter problems! Again!!!!

Yeah I've checked the clearance too. It's been good I've tried shimming several different combinations also. It's a th350 tranny behind a 350 motor

timming can cause drag and kickback....... what is wrong with the starters? broken nose or bendix or just brush wear?

Re: Starter problems! Again!!!!

check the teeth on the flywheel for worn, broken, or missing..... might just replace starter and flywheel.

Re: Starter problems! Again!!!!

I know it sounds weird but are you using the correct bolts? I used hardware store bolts on one of mine and kept going through starters. Turns out the bolt was bottoming out just as the split washer flattened. It looked and felt tight but was letting the starter twist away from the flywheel. Found a Chevy starter-specific bolt in the help! section at the parts store and it was a RCH shorter than the bolt I was using. Solved my issue.

Re: Starter problems! Again!!!!

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna get new starter bolts too, I've tried a few different ones so I know that could cause problems also
