Rear discs install question

Hey everybody,

I just finished up installing new discs in the rear of my 64 swb. However, getting the calipers with pads on the rotors was a mess. The pads are so close, the rotors won't spin now. It is like the pads that came with the setup are just a little too thick. Has anyone else had this happen to them when installing discs? Also, any suggestions on how to get sme play? Thanks guys!

Re: Rear discs install question

What I've always done is use the old pads and a c clamp to depress the piston. On the old ones When the pad wears down, the piston has to extend further to make up the slack. The c clamp method resets the piston and allows you to put in new full size pads.

Re: Rear discs install question

I tried a c clamp, but the piston seemed to be all the way in. It is a brand new caliper and brand new pads...

What would be the advantage of turning the rotors vs shaving a little off the brake pads? The rotors are brand new

Thanks!

This is the kit I bought off eBay. They are gm calipers, but I am not sure specifics on them. In should also say it is just a rolling chassis at this point, no engine.

Re: Rear discs install question

According to the link that you posted it looks like those calipers are going to need what we call a "caliper retraction". That means that the calipers pistons are going to need to be "screwed" in. Anotherwords you can't just press in the caliper piston with a c clamp you will have to turn the piston clockwise, for most cars, at the same time you compress it in.

I guess that is why they call it a learning process. Can you give me some kore details on how I would get it compressed/ turn the piston? It appears the piston is all the way in right now. It is flush with the caliper and does not dtick out any really. Thanks a bunch!!!!!

Go down to your local Autozone or Oreillys and rent the tool for it. It should look something like this. What you do is line up the two little notches on the tool with the notches on the caliper piston and then just turn it in.

Your welcome hope it all works out. You might want to look at your caliper pistons to make sure we are headed down the right path. Let me know how it turns out.

I wish I had better news. The pistons were all the way in. I used the bench grinder on one pad and shave just a little off and helped a lot. I guess I will do that to the other side and have pretty tight brakes for a while....

Ok so my next question is, did you make sure and line up the notches in the pads with the notches on the pistons? You may have to back out the pistons a little to get them to line up.

Yep. Did that too. I went the less expensive route and bought my set up on eBay. I think it is probably a more generic setup and I am thinking that is why I am fighting a little bit. I got the front discs from the same seller and they were tight, but they at least rotate! Would it be bad thing to shave the pads a touch? Thanks again for all your help Shawn!!

Re: Rear discs install question

No it won't be a bad thing to shave the pads down a bit, just watch that you keep the surface flat and don't leave grooves.
