turn signal problems

I am changing my 66 truck from a three speed to a four speed. The 66 three speed turn signal mechanizm, which was broke, is different than the 65 four speed mechanizm I purchased. Is this because one is a three speed and one is a four speed, or is it because one is a 66 and one is a 65. If it's because one is a three speed and one is a four speed should I just go ahead and get a four speed column.
