Mine was with a 71 with a late model stepper on it, late model LT1, VETTE LIGHTS, 17's (and this was back in about 93-94) it was the same color as my truck, gosh everytime i think about seeing that truck i smile, i remember askin dad when I was about 8....."dad can you buy me that truck" he said Greg I wish i could buy you that one but i dont have that much money but i promise you if you go to college i will build you your own....later on the truck was totaled some young punk was racing and destroyed it, that thing was perfect or as i remember it, what about your stories?...........

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
Here's an older pic of my old long departed 2wd 71 C/10 that had a 400 small block and 3spd...My first 67-72.I sorta miss it but I've moved on to taller trucks
Except for the motor it was stock, even the trim..Factory A/C and it was a custom deluxe,it wasnt a bad little 2wd.. Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 09-20-2007 at 11:18 PM. |

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
I've always liked these trucks, but I guess my first love would have to the '71 SWB fleet that was my first one. I sold it back in 2000 when we were buying our house, and instantly regretted it. I have been on the lookout for a good replacement since then. Even though I have had my 1 tons, my wrecker and my blazer for a while, I wanted another SWB fleetside to use as my daily driver. I finally found my '69 a few months ago, and I do not plan on letting it go! Even though my '69 is a nicer truck than my '71 (READ: I did not put those stripes on there, it was the PO's doing) I still kinda miss my first love!

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My first love was a construction orange 69 SWB Step that was a county work truck that my dad purchased for $500, man when that thing sat in the sun you should have seen the oil that it left from the wood bed. Anyways the whole family restored that truck, my brother bought it from my dad long time ago and still has it, he just recently finished gettting it painted again and lookin nice.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
1969.....Daily driver......I bought it in about 1992. 3rd owner and last owner. I was hit on I-75 and it was a complete loss after the dust settled. Not 1 piece of sheetmetal was useable and the suspension was completely torn from the underside.
307 2bbl Turbo 400 rear leafs. That lasted 80K after I bought it. Upgraded to a crate 350, carter 4bbl, HEI, power steering. The bed looked like it had never been used.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
I worked in a bodyshop in highschool. The owner had a 68c10 out back witha blown motor in it. 250.00 drug it home. I freshened up the 355 from my 72 chevelle, putta bigger cam in it. Wow that truck was fast, it sure didnt like me shifting into 2nd. It kept breaking driveshafts and carrier bearings. About 15 years later i got another one of these trucks. Yeah i waited too long.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My current truck is my first love, I remeber playing in the bed and around the truck at a really early age. My truck is how my parents met, my dad had it in the late 70's after he swaped a vega for it. He put in rocker pannels, got it running and painted it. After my older half brothers drove it for a little while he put it up for sale and my mom stoped and bought it. This was about 81 and they were later mairried. I got the truck when I would not stop bugging them for a 66 Vw bug. It is my first car and first rebuild project.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My current truck is also my first truck love. In about another month I will have owned it for 7 years already....kinda strange, since it seems like I just bought it yesterday! I bought it when I was 16 and in high school. Its been off the road for about 3.5 years now, and I only drove it for 3.5 years. Sadly, the body is too far gone to really be worth fixing, with the cab being shot, and quite a bit of the bed. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I will keep it for sure! Eventually down the road when I have the time/money/shop to work on a truck, I am going to build another Ochre and white 71/72 LWB, to be just like mine but nice. I drove it all through high school and a year of college, so I have many fond memories of the truck.
This pic is old, and the truck looks nowhere near this nice now after sitting outside for so long. I still drive it every time I go home to my parents house, and it still runs great!

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
I fell in love with a 1970 c10 a friend had, he (in 1974) built a 425 hp 350 for it, when we went to the races he got a trophy for best burn out ( you couldn't see the bed). I was offered the truck for $1500.00 in 1974. But I couldn't come up with the money, so his dad bought it. His dad made him replace the heads, because "with them hot rod heads, a man can't even pull his boat out of the lake without burning up the tires".

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My grandpappys '72 1 ton back in the late 80's? Was used daily until the mid 90's when rust got the better of her. It used to have a flatbed dump box on it. The entire back half of the frame was cut off and put on another truck. Spent MANY MANY summers hauling firewood from an Amish fella my grandpa bought from every year (he marked the trees we (grandpa) cut down), we then cut em up, loaded the truck, brought it home, split it, and grandpa kept enough for himself and sold the rest, which we would deliver. The truck was also used as a scrap hauler. The old girl had the grim task of hauling first gen camaros/birds and 67-72 trucks to a scrapyard near Erie, PA. (All vehicles were rusted out NY cars that we shot even back in the early 90's.)
May she rust in peace *You can't really tell in the pics, but most of the metal is missing from the bodyline down

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My dad had a 72 2wd lwb that was fully loaded. That was before I knew what great trucks these were. Dad traded it in for a 84 Chevy.
Oh well...I finally saw the light and now I have a 70cst. Who knew these trucks would become icons?

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My granddad's 68 longstep (it was actually a C20) He lived on a rocky farm. He would take the grandkids for rides around the farm in it. He called them "Bump, bump" rides. When he died we hauled it to our farm. One winter my brother and I tore the carb and fuel tank down and got it running pretty good. We kept if for a few years. We would start it up and drive it around every now and again and haul brush and stuff. We sold it for $500. I wish I still had it.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
My first was a '70 C10 2wd long box. My dad bought it in 1988 for me to use for High School. It was a one owner with a 307 4-speed, extra tank, tool box on the side, and no power anything. She was straight and rust free with a little over 100k. I drove it through HS, Army, and College and finally gave it back to my parents. I bought a '95 C1500, but it just wasn't the same.
When my parents moved they sold it to a guy to haul trash-it is all beat up and rusty now. After the '95 I bought a '97 and a then a '98. I got tired of paying for a service tech to plug into a computer and then pay for parts that I couldn't replace. I sold the truck to a neighbor and went looking for an old Chevy. After driving the no-option no-power '70 C10, I wanted some comfort. I looked for a year before finding this one on Ebay. It is a 3-owner 61,000 mile original. She has a big-block, th400, PS, PB, AC, AM/FM radio, and lots of character. I like the '71-'72 nose and the fact it has disc brakes and 5-lugs. I am driver her now everyday and love the power and looks I get. Here are some pics of the "new" one. Now I want to find a SWB fleetside.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
I have two. On is my dad’s 72 Custom 10 2wd long fleet dark green with white top 307 2bbl/ auto, PS PB non factory AC, added under dash AC. He bought it new in 72. He could not afford a big block Cheyenne or otherwise loaded truck like my Uncle Leslie (his brother) bought. (My dad had three kids, my uncle had none). My brothers, dad and I had a lot of good times pulling his bass boat all over Texas to go fishing with that truck. He would put an aluminum camper shell on it and would lay a piece of ply wood and a 2x4 brace across the front area of the bed and he and my oldest brother slept there on an air matress and me and my other brother slept on the floor on a piece of foam. My mom said that was too much “roughing it” . for her and usually left this to “the boys”. Unfortunately, in about 1978./ 79 my oldest brother talked dad into trading the ‘72 for a '74 Cheyenne or Silverado( whatever they were called ) ½ ton with a 454. After the good mileage he enjoyed with the 307 for so long, my dad went about a year with the gas hog 454 before the middle brother talked him into swapping in the 350 out of his hot rod 73 Camaro for the 454. (The 454 went into the Camaro until too many tickets forced the car’s sale. ( I never figured this one out- he let my brother buy a 76 Trans AM 400 4 spd with the $$$) the '74 PU was sold soon after. Dad regretted selling his C10 ever since. After years of working on cars and trucks for my brothers and I , he finally got one for himself. It is a 71 GMC 1500 SWB step, 250 6 cyl, 3 OTT, no options, not even a radio –FARM TRUCK--. It had not been rgistered since 1982, and only had 18k miles, but had never been garaged. It needed both fenders, rockers and a driver cab corner. We did not have to touch the running gear except for seals/ gaskets. We finished a frame off resto last month and used it in my wedding 2 weeks ago.
On the plus side, the other truck I have fond memories of is still around. My oldest brother bought the ’72 Cheyenne from my uncle in 2004, shortly before my uncle passed away. Otherwise, I am sure his stepson would have sold it for junk after my uncle died. It was solid, but had a lot of “old man fixes” and neglect. Luckily it only needed a pass fender and fenderwell and rockers. We did a frame off resto on it. It is a all black in and out ½ ton 2wd 400 BB 4bbl/ TH400, A/C factory tilt, bed side tool box, tach added during resto, (found it at the New Braunfels swap meet a couple yrs back for $50 (!). I can remember the “T” missing from the “CHEVROLET” on the tailgate back when I was a kid. It was like that until about two weeks ago when I came across a fellow South of Austin parting out a 72 Cheyenne and I bought the tailgate which was missing a few letters, but had the “T” we needed. We could never find anyone willing to sell only one letter, only the full set. Uncle Leslie’s truck still has all of the original interior, except the dash pad, even still has the original full vinyl seat cover w/ Cheyenne scroll. Other trucks my brothers and I have had through the yrs: 72 Custom 10 short step, black w/ white top 250 6 cyl, 3 OTT no options, oldest bros truck. He swapped in a "hopped up" 355/ 2004r overdrive and Centerlines, repainted solid black. Non AC, added under dash AC PS PB SOLD $7k 72 Custom Deluxe 10 long fleet light blue with white top, factory lower side molding, 307 2bbl, 3 OTT, PS , non PB, non AC . Middle bros truck. He swapped to a TH400 and 4bbl with aftermarket aluminun intake added PB, newer truck rallys added Cheyenne Super seat cover and factory tach (found tach in a salvage yard for $20) This truck was stolen and stripped, recovered, but rolling chassis, cab and engine went for $1500 at insurance auction. Took the $10k from insurance co. 72 C10 long fleet solid medium yellow 400 BB, TH400, painted “dog dish” hub caps factory AC PS PB, only chrome on it was the mirrors. Middle bros truck. It still had the original tires and spare, belts, hoses, clamps air filter- 16k miles on it when he purchased it from the original owner in 1998 for $1k (!). The original owner said he special ordered the truck like this. The window sticker shows it was more expensive than the 72 Cheyenne my uncle bought new.(!) We replaced the pass fender and fender well with NOS GM parts and repainted it Corvette Yellow and installed newer Rally wheels. SOLD $12k 71 C10 Cheyenne Super still had the original White/ Bronze/ white 400 BB TH400 factory tilt, tach, FACTORY CRUISE, FACTORY rear air shocks with onboard air compressor and AC DELCO in cab controller, bed side tool box. 76k miles. My middle brother bought this truck in Port Lavaca TX last yr for $3500, fixed a few things, (tires, front bumper seat cover) then drove it to Virginia ( where he lives now) and put it on EBAY where it sold for $13k(!) 55 Chevy ½ ton Big Window, stock 235 6cyl, 3 OTT, OD out of a 58 or 59 ½ ton half way restored for the past 15 yrs- My truck, still have it 55 small window, 283 TH350 Oldest bros truck. Sold in 1991 $3k My current project: 72 C10 Custom Deluxe long fleet no engine. Good exterior sheetmetal even the radiator support, pass front fender/ fenderwell, with exception of rockers and floor patch on driver side floor. ) I paid $400 for it. I bought a SWB rolling chassis, bed, tailgate and almost all of the 72 Cheyenne Super Specific parts from a guy in Mustang Ridge (cab and front clip COMPLETELY rusted out, ) for $500, including the Super title and VIN tag and an extra SWB fleet bed and Cheyenne tailgate. I plan to put the 72 Custom Deluxe cab on the SWB frame and install a rebuilt 71 SB 355 and a 700r4 OD in it with Vintage Air AC and build a Cheyenne SUPER clone. I will soon try and post pics of as many of the truck as I can |

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
2 trucks for me, granddaddy on my dads side bought a new 72 pastel green long fleet no options truck, when he passed away it became my dads truck, he put a set of chrome wheels on it that he got from kale yarboro's brother, and swapped out the old six for a small block. he drove it for years. and the other truck was a red-w-white top 67 short fleet truck that my granddaddy on my mothers side bought new. I tore up the bumper on it when my brother dared me to turn the ignition switch to start . (i was about 5 years old).
they are both long gone now but i want to restore a pair of these trucks in honor of them. (with a few mods of course )

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
Growing up in Prairie Village, Kansas we had a neighbor who was a retired GM Service Manager. He had factory ordered a 1971 swb 4x4 truck in blue and white with every option immaginable. My dad would borrow his truck to do "chores" and I have very fond memories cruising around town. The neighbor actually got a kick out of seeing the truck out and about since he wasn't very active.

Re: What was your first C/10 love?
I didn't own the first one I fell for. It was during the spring of '69, when a guy a few houses down from us bought a brand new Hugger Orange '69 C-20. It had about every option except 2-tone paint.
