Unhappy Help ! 72 won't accept fuel

I am not able to get fuel into the fuel tank on my 72 . It is a new rear mount poly tank and the filler hole is on the left rear side about 2 inches higher than the clearance light. It is well vented to the atmosphere with two seperate vent hoses and the fill pipe/hose has a smooth transition down to the tank. I can put fuel in with a gas can........but when I try to fill it at the pump gas just spits out and the nozzle keeps snapping off. Anyone have any ideas ????????

Wow that's crazy, I'm having the exact same problem. I also installed a poly tank with it vented to atmosphere on both sides. I was just searching previous threads, but found nothing specifically regarding this problom. I noticed my fill hose angles back up before dropping in the tank, could this be the problem?

you have to pull the nozzle out a bit and hold it while you pump.

That's what I have to do with my stock filler neck/tank too. I also have to monitor it while filling because it will overfill

Re: Help ! 72 won't accept fuel

I also am having the same problem. I went as far as removing all the filler hoses out to the side of the bed, cutting a square in the bed floor and inserting the gas nozzle directly into the 3.5" of hose attached to the neck.

I think the poly tank has some sort of restriction on the filler. Where did the other two get their tanks? I bought mine from a vendor on eBay.

Mine also has the poly tank. I bought it that way. I have to hang the noozle almost all the way out to get it to pump. It is pretty easy to overfill. The filler is in the stock location.

Re: Help ! 72 won't accept fuel

FYI: I just wanted to update you all on my fuel tank problem. I have tried just about everything I could think of to fix the extremely slow fuel filling problem. Including adding more venting and re-routing the fill hose on my poly tank, but nothing worked. I finally bought a used fuel tank neck off an original tank from a member of this site and used fuel hose and hose clamps attached it to the inlet of my poly tank. Now it works perfectly and I can even place the gas pump on the highest setting and let it run. I guess it just needed this part to make the correct angle around the body mount.

I thought it was just me. Mine is the same; I have to listen for the sound of it getting full, even though I replaced all the hoses.

Re: Help ! 72 won't accept fuel

I had this problem using an original tank and found that the vent line from right next to the tank fill inlet was blocked. Once I cleared it, the gas filled just fine. Check your vents!
