Arizona Emissions

Hi
I have a friend with a 85 chevy truck that will not pass emissions. He has the queadrajet with the computer. Can we swap it out to a new carb edelbrock/holley? We would like to eliminate alot of the vacuum assy under the hood at the same time but we do not know what Az emissions looks at.

Re: Arizona Emissions

You need to find out what the state requires. Some look for any changes or disconnected hoses and flunk you outright. Overly advanced timing will ruin emissions at idle. Most sniff for excessive hydrocarbons etc. in the tailpipe. Retarded timing at idle helps keep these things down, but the truck will run like crap. I once had a modified van with dual carbs, a 3/4 cam, headers and full centrifugal distributor. It failed emissions until I retarded the timing to minus 5 degrees at idle, and jacked up the carbs speed so it would run ( barely). It then passed, but wouldn't beat a baby carriage in a downhill race until I readjusted it. My Corvette passed because it was too low to put on the rollers. Go figure. It's just tree-hugger insanity and it's going to get worse with the crew we got in at the top.

Too funny! .... what ^ said sounds right. check your laws. but chances are, no he cant. and to have the computer carbs re-built is crazy expensive!
