Steering gearbox seal

after getting my ps pump together and running it a little bit, it was leaking bad where the shaft goes into the pump. sooo, i read a lot of how to's and it seemed easy enough. after getting the input shaft out and changing the seal...im having a tough time getting it back in. i counted the threads before taking it out (counted 4)...as i dropped it back in, started threading fine and about 4 threads from where i need to be, it is super tough to turn..like almost impossible. i know im not using the correct wrench for the holes, but damn i didn't think it would be that hard to turn only halfway to where it needs to be. is there something i did wrong or is it as simple as getting the right wrench to turn it...?

and this is with the lock retainer hand tightened ...with this retainer on there is only 4 threads showing...but i can't remember if i counted before i took the retainer off or after... i have looked at a lot of new ones and all the pictures show 0 threads after the retaining nut is on...you can see 4 showing on mine.

I had a feeling we were not talking steering pump here but steering Box! Thats why I asked you to post pics!
Hopefully someone else here has had one of these apart (i have not)

What I see is not good.

The threaded part is call the adjuster plug. If the spool valve comes out (photo number 2) you have to be very careful that all the notches and pins line up correctly when it is reinstalled. Otherwise you get what's in photo number 3.

Once the spool valve is install correctly then you can install the adjuster plug. It gets torqued with a spanner then backed up about 10mm. The lock ring can then be installed.

How can u tell if the spool valve is correct? Nothing came apart other than the top part (threaded piece). I set the shaft in the pump and spun it a little until it grabs the main gear inside, then it drops in and i can begin to thread it back in. Is it supposed to get super tough while threading ? Im not using a spanner wrench, thats why i was thinking why its hard to turn. Im about 3 threads from it being where it was when i took it off.

Inside your box is the worm gear. DO NOT REMOVE IT unless you want to rebuild the whole box.

Turn your spool valve over and you'll see a notch. It must line up with the pin on the worm.

ah ok i do remember seeing that...i will pull it back out tomorrow. did u use a spanner wrench to get the adjuster back on?

The adjuster plug should thread in easily. Only the final adjustments will you need a spanner. Like you said, you'll know it's right if you only have a few threads showing.

Also note, in this pic:



you can see another pin on the spool valve that lines up with the input/torsion shaft notch. It's about 1/2 inch from the bottom.

well i go to pull it back out and guess what...f'n worm gear came out too! now what do i do? i havent moved the box...cant i just set the worm gear back in?

No, all the bearing in the ball nut have fallen out. The only solution is total disassembly at this point. Might as well put in a $30 kit.

Really not that hard. The only special tool is a 0-75 inch pound dial torque wrench

I'd give you a hand if I could but I'm about 100 miles away.

Man this sucks..i knew i was gonna ef this thing up


I wouldnt really feel comfortable trying a rebuild...wonder if it would be cheaper/ better to pay someone to rebuild or get a rebuilt one? I seen them on oreilly for 125...
