just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
just picked me up a '67 c10 small window farm truck for $300. its in pretty rough shape but i figured for the money it would give me something to tinker with. it appears to have been a v8 truck converted to a l6 being that the engine stands are in the front holes(my understanding l6 stands are in the rear holes) and the front cross member is notched to clear the crank pully. the motor appears to be newer as it has egr and the ignition looks newer.
i was wondering if anyone could tell me what engine it has if these are the right numbers: 348675 i believe D255, not sure on the D this was behind the dipstick. and last number i could find was either C or G then ON2 also could anyone tell me what trans it has, it is a 4 speed manual with reverse towards the driver then down. all the 70s chevs i had had reverse towards the passenger then down and granny first and i believe those were the SM465 if im not mistaken. the trans has about 2 inches of crap caked around it so finding numbers will be difficult. thanks p.s. dont mind the happy garbage can. |

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
If the trans has 1 pto cover it is a sm-420,if it has 2 pto covers it is a sm-465. Looks like a great buy for the money!

Cool truck and great save! You are correct the motor stands would be in the fron holes for a V8 an moved back for an I6. Where are you getting the engine numbers from? I am used to 7 digits not 6? I like the color, one of my favorites! What is the plan?

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
Great save! By using the term "tinker" I assume you are gonna get it running and driveable. I bought mine for $700, pulled it outta the woods and got it running and driving. We been to cruise nights and burned up a bunch of gas running around together. It can't speak but its like cleaning up an old mangy dog. You can tell it loves and appricieates it. Enjoy your cheap find!

It should have an SM420 trans if not swapped out.

this truck was headed for the scrap yard after my brothers wifes grandpa died so i figured what the hay and offered them scrap price and they said come get it. i had it running within an hour of gettin it home and it seems to run pretty good. there's basically no bed floor to it and the driver floor board is pretty rotted but other than that its mostly just banged up. I'm on a pretty tight budget so my plans are to try and find a cheap v8 and fix the cab floor then just get it road ready and drive it and maybe throw a bit of money at it here and there as i can, kinda like a toothpaste green rat rod project. its good to be back in the club, i had a pretty nice '71 k20 up until about 5 years ago and have been kickin myself in the a$$ ever since i sold it. |

Nothin' wrong with a six. If it runs good why waste the money? Put an S-10 5 speed in it and cruise.... Just my 2¢ worth.

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
i know there's nothin wrong with a six, but IMO nothin sounds better than an 8 and It's pretty easy to find running 350s around here for around $200. but I'm happy with the six til the right deal comes along. oh and ya I'm definatly gonna try and keep that color, maybe down the road throw some white spokes on her.
since it already has the engine stands in the v8 location would it be pretty much a drop in job for a sbc? also if it does have the sm420 trans are they tricky to work on? i think the syncros are goin out in 2nd as it grinds a bit goin into that gear, but other than that it seems to shift pretty good. how hard would that be to fix, I've been back yard mechanicing most my life but never had to go into a manual trans before. thanks |

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
nice truck, that's pretty much the look i had in mind. i prefer the handshakers so I'll stick with the manual. I'll have ta keep my eyes open for a deal on an s-10 trans, but it probably wouldn't be for a while.

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
Yeah it would be hard for me to find that number when looking up SBC numbers. I had a brain fart there. I dont know of any I6 casting number resources. I will see if I can find one.

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
did a quick search and looks like it is a 250 cid I6, all searches were consistent on that but not so consistent on years, some say 73-76 and other 62-79.

Re: just picked up a 67 c10 farm beater
thanks, for the info. i was gonna say i double checked the number and it was only those six digits. while stripping the cab to hose out the mouse crap i found a note scribbled on the inside roof that appears to say the engine was swapped in '79 so that could be from any of the years u stated, but having the egr valve my guess would be sometime in the '70s. thanks again for the help.
