Re: First start advice.

I would need some context. Has it been sitting 2 weeks? 2 decades? What's the scenario?

Re: First start advice.

I'd pre-oil it. Pull the distributor, find a junkyard distributor shaft and hook it to your power drill. It gets the oil pump working and prevents dry start that could cause damage.

You sort of have to remove/grind off the gear. Unless you've got a REALLY powerful drill.

You could also (in addition, not instead of) pull the plugs and shoot oil into each cylinder and then turn if over by hand a couple of times.

Re: First start advice.

I use marvel mystery oil in the cylinders of the engines I build at work. Oil will work as well. It can't hurt to squirt a little bit in each one to help free everything up and build compression. I'd prime the system too. Might be a good idea to go thru the carb if it's been sitting that long with fuel in it.

Re: First start advice.

THE most important thing to do is get oil into the valve train. Cam lobes love oil and hate being without it!

A flat blade screw driver (or old junked distributor shaft) fitted into a drill, down the distributor hole will spin the oil pump that will fill the oil galleys nicely!
