I can buy a generic tailgate locally for about 100 bucks, but they are a waste of money. The body shops in your town order their aftermarket body parts from a jobber somewhere. They all do. They can get you a generic gate for a hundred or so from them.

The last one I bought fit so poorly, that in a fit or rage, I threw it into the street in front of my house. My driveway is about 40 feet long, so that should tell you something. If I can throw the thing 40 feet, it ain't much of a tailgate.

The board vendors sell a Goodmark or a Tri-Plus tailgate for more money, but they are a good unit. It will be heavier guage metal and will fit properly.

The PO of my Jimmy put a generic tailgate on it. I think it was made out of tin foil. My dog stood on it yesterday and I could see it flex with every step he took. Be 100% certain it is of good quality. For $130 I can't imagine it is going to be very good. You get what you pay for.

I looked high and low before I found a good OEM one to work with. That is what I would do if possible. I have never tried the repops.
good luck

Red face imagine that

I called http://www.chevypartspro.com/ today because curiousity was killing me. the guy answered the phone and answerd all my questins up to the point of the qaulity and gauge of steel on the tail gate. HE did me a favor he hung the phone up. I took it at that point that he was to imbarresed to tell me details about the quality and gauge thickness of the gate. before I asked about quality he did tell me they are getting them from a source that makes them in Taiwan. so I have learned from you here again on the forum

What type tailgate are you looking for? Fleetside or stepside? I have a GMC stepside tailgate. The guy I bought it from said it's a NOS. It been shot with red primer and you can see where the factory sticker was removed. It looks like genuine GM to me. i just was one at a parts shop. I'm looking for $200 plus shipping if anyones interested.

tailgate issues

I have all new bed sides and front bed panel and switching to a wood bed on my 72 shortbox fleet side so I am looking for a brand new chevy tailgate with new hardware also. leaning more to non lettering tailgate unless I can get a smoking deal for a tail gate that has lettering on it. thanks everyone
