Re: 86 motor in our trucks

86 should be TBI, change the intake and put a carb on it and you should be good to go.

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

An 86 truck engine would be carb I believe. I think 87 was the first year for TBI in trucks, but I could be wrong. Should bolt right in, but will have lots of emission crap on it.

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

87 was the first year for tbi in trucks, 86 would be a carb engine but i'd make sure it was a 350 first most 86 trucks had the 305 unless it was a 3/4 ton or a ton truck, the 86 350 would have had small valves more than likely, it could have 882s' i imagine which are 76 cc 194, 150 valves and those can be made fairly decent, but if its a driver yes it will work only thing is to be correct you will have to use the short water pump because it will have the long pump hope that helps

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

Maniflods probably are a bit different, but if you have headers it shouldn't matter, when i swapped 73 motor in my 85 i had to use the manifolds that came on the 73 engine, can't remember exactly why though.

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

I think the reason Blue85 used the early manifolds is because of the dipstick location. I got an early engine in my '86 and doesnt have a dipstick because the manifolds are stock on that truck... I just change the oil alot

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

Yes you can use the 86 engine in your truck. I have an 88 engine in my 69. The blocks are the same physically. You need to use the rams horn manifolds or headers. If you get an injected engine you can swap to a carb by swapping the intakes. You may have to mod the 2 center manifold bolt holes on each side of the stock intake as the later models are drilled straight up. No big deal. I have an Edel performer intake on mine with stock quadrajet and headers.

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

I have a 305 in my 68 that came out of an 86. I just took the 86 manifold off and put my carb/intake from my old 307 on and it worked fine. As mentioned above, I used my factory ram horn manifolds. It was a direct swap.

Yep, that is what the problem was!

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

to whom is using the 88 block if it was the tbi engine i would assume you have a electric fuel pump? i have an 88 engine in my blazer and all the late model engines have what looks like the spot for the manual fuel pump but it is not machined out

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

Lilpup. I do have the 88 truck engine in my 69. Originally a tbi engine but now carb'd. The block is bored for a mechanical pump and it came with a blockoff plate bolted to it. Some 88 and 89 blocks still had the mech fuel pump provision. Later on the blocks were cast without the pushrod hole in them. All I had to do was remove the blockoff plate and install the pushrod and pump. It's no big deal to install an electric pump inline if your block isn't bored for the mech one.

Re: 86 motor in our trucks

mine had the blockoff plate bolted on it but when i took it off it wasn't machined for the mechanical pump so i just used in inline electrical pump works fine, maybe this block wasn't an 88 as said it was thats what the guy told me i know at first it had the centerbolt heads on it then i ditched them
