Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

Ok looking for parts I came across this...

So my searching of the site says it's a highlander truck without the "YG6-8" promo code...

Needless to say I bought the truck even though the motor & trans are missing, everything else is there...trim was in the box.

The price was right.

So do I have a 'non promo' Highlander?

Pics of the truck:

p.s. I'll be the 2nd owner...

Re: Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

Really nice find. It's not a Highlander though most of the pieces are there (black carpet, parchment interior) but a Custom Deluxe with optional plaid upholstery.

It's a little bit a rarity, "Deluxe" emblem placement on Janesville built "Custom Deluxe" trucks". Take look at this thread:

My question is, was there a separate RPO code for the standard full wheel cover and the highlander ones? And if so, would you have been able to order the Monte type wheel covers on a regular truck?

looks to me like a highlander that just didn't get listed on the SPID, I mean after all they were typed by humans and things happen, right?

Thanks, I was going by a thread that stated that certain plants had different ways of making spids, Atlanta I believe was one...
EDIT to add thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...972+highlander
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...972+highlander

I read that Highlanders have Parchment interior with Parchment seat belts (like mine) vs. black belts on non-Highlander trucks. Maybe it was just a wish lol

I'm happy with the purchase it's pretty damn clean, original paint with very minimal rust!

I didn't know about the wheel cover difference until VA72C10 mentioned it, I've been reading up a lot since yesterday and hadn't seen them talked about.

Re: Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

From SS TIM:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Promo package codes

A= YG6 Plaid Trim, Special Wheelcovers C10 (PA1) or Chrome Hubcaps C20-30 (PO3), Chrome Front Bumper, Upper (Belt) Molding, Door Edge Guards and Below Eye-Line Mirrors. A $94.50 savings.

B= YG7 (includes A) Adds Turbo-Hydramatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. A $178.50 savings.

C= YG8 (includes A and B) Adds A/C and Tint. A $260.50 savings.

The glovebox descriptions varied and "Highlander" may or may not be seen depending on time, plant and if it was a trim or package truck.

It was, as they say, based on a Custom Deluxe trim. In fact it required the RPO Z62 trim (or Z84 on Blazers) and retained almost all of the Custom Deluxe interior. In reality it only changed cloth, keyed trim colors and added carpet.

The seatcover is a Custom Deluxe style with plaid cloth replacing the standard cloth seat inserts, the Cheyenne Super pattern cover was NOT used.

This truck had door edge guards also, although not listed on the spid....

YES.... you have a "Highlander Trim" optioned truck. The code
613 confirms a avocado plaid seat insert and the special trim colors (parchment and black) used on Highlanders as well as the black carpet.

Nice truck!

It is a "Highlander Trim" truck vs a "Highlander Promo Package Truck (YG6-8)".

All Highlanders (pickups) were an upgrade of the Z62 Custom Deluxe trim option and will be badged as "Custom Deluxe".

If you have one of the plaid codes listed on my blurb then its a Highlander! Even Baltimore, that did not normally list trim codes, listed Highlander trim codes on the SPID.

On a "Highlander Trim" truck only the interior was changed. So any exterior or interior option not covered by the Custom Deluxe trim or the Highlander trim upgrade would be free choice.

So the PA1 wheelcovers are the correct for this truck per the SPID.

Yes the equipment levels are similar to what you see as part of a Promo Package C truck there are even still more on top of that!

This truck may have been ordered prior to the release of the Promo Packages.
"Highlander Trim" was available right from the beginning on the 72 MY trucks.
It would be interesting to see when this was made.

Good catch David! Yes this is a Janesville truck with the center justified "deluxe" emblem, as apparently all 71-72 Janesville trucks were. So it does stand out a bit as compared to all the other plants.

Thanks for linking the thread!

The "Special" PA1 wheelcovers included on the "Promo Package Highlanders" were offered on any C10 (w/15" wheels) right from the beginning of the MY. They were expensive too!

If you have a YG8 (Promo Package "C" Highlander) with P01 wheelcovers I'd like to see it. Could you repost or link to the SPID?

Door edge guards were a common accessory and could have easily been added by the dealer or even the owner. As such they would not be on the SPID.

It was great of you to repost the Promo Blurb but over the past two years of research it has been refined a lot to more completely cover the "Highlander Trim" optioned trucks and the "Promo Package Highlander" trucks that included the Highlander trim as part of the packaged options.

Highlander Plaid Trim was a trim upgrade to Z62 Custom Deluxe or Z84 CST (Blazer only) optioned vehicles that changed interior trim details and added black carpet.

Highlander Promo Package trucks were also offered that bundled options with the Higlander Plaid Trim.

These were sales savings packages A,B and C with increasing levels of content.

Thus a YG_ coded promo package truck was also a Highlander but a Highlander trim code was NOT ALWAYS a promo package equipped truck.

Highlander Plaid trim codes All include black dash pad, steering column (with or without tilt) and carpet. In addition the door panels, visors, console (Blazer only) and seat belts were always parchment (white). Seat vinyl was also parchment and the insert color is determined by the specific trim code. So the ONLY variable color keyed interior component was the insert color of the seatcovers.

B= YG7 (includes A) Adds Turbo-Hydramatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. A $178.50 savings.

C= YG8 (includes A and B) Adds A/C and Tint. A $260.50 savings.

Re: Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

Great info!

When I say or hear Highlander I personally am only thinking of or referring to the YG6-8 coded truck with the special wheel covers as a Highlander.

The cool thing about these trucks is you could really make them how you wanted vs today with only a few option "packages" where you are forced to buy all or nothing...

Re: Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

Here are sales book clips showing the "Highlander Trim" upgrade price and the wheelcovers offered.

To sum it up, when you ordered a Custom Deluxe for $103 you could add the Highlander Plaid trim colors and carpet to it for another $68.

If the truck was ordered with a YG6, 7 or 8 Highlander Promo Package it included Custom Deluxe, Highlander Plaid Trim and the bundle options specific to the level ordered.

Thanks, There is a lot of research in this. Now all I have left is to nail specifics on the black or woodgrained lower trim variations.

Its easy to understand why you think that but any 72 with the Highlander Plaid Trim code is a Highlander be it a K5 to a C30.

Promo Package trucks on the surface sound great but to most people a true strict YG6, 7 or 8 is a little off putting.
This is because the package only included the upper belt molding and chromed front bumper as exterior dress in addition to the wheelcovers or hubcaps.
The Highlanders people seem to "like" are the dressed up trucks that have the lower bodyside molding or even Deluxe Two-Tone paint options. Much more so than the basic "spear".

Here is a basic YG6/618 C30 Highlander. Fill in the missing chrome hubcaps and front bumper and there it is, stark.

Re: Did I Stumble Into a Highlander?

Thank you Tim!

I read about every Highlander thread before I posted my thread...Lots of great info!

"It was great of you to repost the Promo Blurb but over the past two years of research it has been refined a lot to more completely cover the "Highlander Trim" optioned trucks and the "Promo Package Highlander" trucks that included the Highlander trim as part of the packaged options."

I cut the lower part off your blurb just to verify what pertained to my conversation, I didn't mean to cut the rest off...

The Blue door tag reads 3/72 for the build date (I will add pics later)
I will also add the Deluxe tags to your other thread with the build sequence number

ODO has 63K miles

Nice find. That one will clean up well and will be a great truck to have fun with. I like the olive and white colors with the parchment interior.

Congratulations!
