Tire Sizes For Rallies?

My '83 stepside has the factories rally wheels with the 235/75/15. Id like to go a little wider for new tires. What sizes am I able to go with?

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

275/60R15 are a nice fit. They fill in the wells very nicely.

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

I'd say 255/60 front, 275-295/60 back. My backs are 275/60's fyi.

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

if your truck is stock height or just leveled, get 255/70/15 all around, otherwise you will have way too much fender gap for the smaller dia tires listed above

I agree..I have a 30" tire with a 4.5-5.0 drop and anything smaller looks like it would create a big gap. Name: IMG_0679.jpg

A 255-70 is 29.1" tall

I disagree. The 275/60 which others (and myself) prefer are within .2 of an inch in height of the stock 235/75 tires in height. That's too close to even argue about. Heck, the 454SS trucks came with them from the factory and they looked real good at stock height.

I agree. The 255/70's are a perfect fit for a nice clean rally wheel and stock ride height. Search around this board a little and you'll find quite a few with 255/70's on that look perfect.

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

235/70/15 and 275/60/15 are 28" tall.

235/75/15 and 255/70/15 are 29" tall.

Either will look good at stock height. All will work on a 15x8 rim.

It's when you go less than 28" tall that the tires look a bit small without a lowered ride height. 26" and 27" tall are often used on cars but look good on a lowered truck.

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

I run 235/70 in front and 275/60 in the rear. A lot of people use 255/60s up front, but I think they're too short. Not a fan of extra wheel gap.

you need to check your math

235/75/15 = 28.87 (235/25.4 x 75% x 2 +15)
275/60/15 = 27.99 (275/25.4 x 60% x 2 +15)

Thats closer to 1" shorter tire

I know about 454ss, heres mine

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

Depends on what look you're going for, but here's a fairly stock setup:
235/75/15s on 15x8 Rallys sitting at stock ride height...

Im leaving my truck stock too. Kinda funny that you need to leave it stock to be unique since most 2wd's here have flip kit and spindles lol

do you have any more pics of your truck you could post?

Re: Tire Sizes For Rallies?

Most 73-87 truck/suburban rallies where 8" wide wheels, although there are some truck rallies that are 7" wide. Van rallies of the same era are 6.5" wide. I have some of all three.

For a stock bight truck I like the 255/70's all around on 8" rims. If you lower it, then I like the rears to be 255/70 or 275/60 on 8" rims and the fronts to be 215/70 on 6.5" rims or 225/70 on 7" rims. That is just my preference...
