Drive shaft swap

My 69 has a very small looking 2 piece drive shaft.i"m thinking maybe for a 6 banger.will a 73/87 drive shaft be a direct swap for a turbo 350 tranny?

Re: Drive shaft swap

your driveshaft should be fine.
I highlu doubt a shaft from a square body would work, but you may get lucky.

Re: Drive shaft swap

The 2 piece driveshaft was used for longbeds both fleet and stepside. I don't believe that GM used different diameter driveshafts depending on engine size. If I'm wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.

Re: Drive shaft swap

Short beds also got the 2 pieces, the short beds I have come across had the skinny 2 piece shafts, and long beds and burbs had a thicker drive shaft.

Re: Drive shaft swap

short 6 cylnders got the 1 piece all others got 2 piece from my understanding.
tube diameter is directly porportional to driveshaft lenth and maximum rpm. we use 2.5"x.083" for the dirt track guys, ive never seen one come back because it couldnt handel the power. they usually are running 1310 sieries ujoints thats generally what these trucks have from the factory.

Re: Drive shaft swap

These are factory drive shafts. Both are out of chevy trucks long beds one is a 67 shaft and the other is a factory 71 Both have been used in my 71 long bed truck for years.
I keep one so I don't have the truck down when it does go out. The first one last almost 10 years before I needed to replace the bearings.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Drive shaft swap

I recently changed my truck over to a swb frame that had a 2 piece driveshaft, I wanted a 1 piece so a buddy had one out of a 73-87 so I bought it and went to autozone and bought the U-joint that would mate the driveshaft to the the rear end. The part # if anyone wants to change they're truck over is 217414 or 3-3130DL it was $8.99.

Thats not the case at least for 71's, short 6's with manual 3 speeds came with the skinny 2 piece.

I ve had my share of these trucks, 2 burbs 68-72, no 67's yet and NONE of them came with a factory 1 piece shaft.
