Help find a thread - cutting down seat mounts

Gents,

Been away for too long as a father/son project has been taking up all my shed time.

However! I am now sort of back on Woody as #3 son needs my side of the garage to continue his/ our restoration on a a rather rusty Alfa GTV Junior.

Fun times.

Anyway, I thought I had booked marked a thread that showed somebody cutting down the bench seat mounts to lower the seat but I can’t find it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

He was bolted the mounts to a steel box and the sliced and inch out - liked the way it had been done and would rather copy somebody else rather than re invent the wheel.

Help appreciated.

Did the Google search across the site but came up with nothing. The 'How Too" was actually in somebody's build thread.

I have chopped down the seat rails over the weekend and will report back once they are fitted and in the truck. Quite easy to take 1" out of the mounts and get about 1" worth of additional rearward travel as well.

What that equates too in terms of overall ergonomics and getting my eye line out of the tinted band at the top of the screen, well... will let you know!

Unfortunately have lost the ability to host pictures and then share them here so... time to use the theatre of the mind.

I had some thick steel plate that I bolted the seat brackets too so that I was sure that they were going to end up in the ball park when it came time to fit back in the truck.

Used 1" masking tape to give me a 'mark' from the mounting feet and then used another piece above that to give me my 1" slice.

Cut, cut. Grind, grind.

Mated the seat rails to the mounting feet so that the front part lined up - this gave me about 1" of additional rearward movement.

Had to make a slit in the back of the forward seat mount so that I could open it up to mate with the lower portion.

Boxed up the resulting void to put some strength back in the mounting frame. probably overkill but as I was there...

With all the welding done it lowers the seat by about 1 1/2".

All the sliders still work so the seat can still be moved backwards and forwards.

Ergonomics.

Better. I now don't look through the dark strip of the windscreen which is a major improvement.

Legs still pretty close to the bottom of the full size wheel but not touching.

Throttle pedal is going to need some adjustment but think that is a combination of the DBW pedal as well as the seat movement.

Mistakes were made.

Even with the feet bolted to the steel plate the frame didn't match up with the holes in the floor.

They weren't out by much but enough that it was a faff getting it bolted in - so much so that there is only one bolt holding the rear in on each side.

I haven't completed the interior yet so the sets will be coming out again at which time I will remake the rear feet so that they line up.

Only driven around the drive way so will provide a more in-depth analysis once I have some miles on old Woody.

Probably took me about 2 hours in total.

I think that is a first to shorten the bracket and still keep ability to adjust. I have never seen another post here or a post on youtube that accomplishes that.

It really is a very simple process.

Using the masking tape as a template for the cuts meant it was just a matter of put Tab A into Slot B.

As my intention is that my good lady wife will be driving Woody as well as myself it needed the adjustability.

I am not an overly large Gentlemen - 6'1" about 190lb - but Her Ladyship is a 5'6' so needs to move the seat forward.

Will see if I can find an alternative hosting solution to share the measure photos I took.

I've never heard of somebody needing a hosting solution. You can just upload any pictures directly to this thread.

Mmmm... its asking for the URL of my images when I hit the picture icon. Unless I am missing something and there has been a change that I am aware of?

Click the "go advanced" button if there is one and then below the message box there is a "manage attachments" button. You can upload pictures there. The pictures should be smaller than a modern camera can make in order to upload without errors. I usually make mine 2000 pixels wide.

It’s not picture icon, it’s the paperclip. Click on that, choose your file from your photos. Upload. Once you have uploaded 5 pictures, then you close the window at the bottom.

Don't think I have a picture fitted but glad to report that the seat is now nice and clean rather than the grubby version on the bench

That is really neat, just fantastic. You may the first to lower seats and keep an adjustable mount. The internet is crammed full of pictures of seat-lowering projects using non-adjustable and lower mounts made of bent sheet metal or wood. Yours is superior.

I doubt that very much but I will bask in the reflected glory all the same!

Pretty sure I saw somebody doing the same in a build thread which is where this started.

Over the weekend will pull Woody out of the shed to get a few more pictures for those that are interested.
