overflow
On my 68 there is no overflow container for the radiator just the pipe so if I fill it to full it pukes fluid all over the place. Looks like there is no spot for an overflow either. Any ideas pics or help would be most helpfull.

I have seen where someone used a washer fluid bottle for an overflow and it looked original. I was thinking about using an original washer fluid bottle and bracket and just mounting one one the passenger side of the core support or even on the passengr side fender.

I went to advanced autoparts and bought a generic overflow bottle....I mounted the bracket to the fender right behind the battery and right above the inner fender....I then ran the tube from the radiator along the grille line with the electrical wires, and into the bottom of the bottle....the mount the original black tubing to the top of the bottle, and out to some area where it can easily flow out of the engine compartment without puddling....the top is pretty cheesy and doesn't look all that great, but I mounted it without putting any new holes in the truck....and its relatively hidden.....I can post pics later if someone else doesn't (I think it cost like $8....for me it was worth it).

I would like some pics so it flows into bottom of bottle then if bottle fills flows out top and away? I was wondering if there was any room under the battery tray for anything.

When I got my truck it emptied into an old rad fluid bottle as well. I have been thinking of finding some sort of billet crome bottle or canister of some kind and mounting it near the rad.

This is someones 67-72 with a 73 bottle I think. Mine is the same bottle but located on the passenger fender: I am still looking for a replacement bracket, as mine got lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Does the overflow hose mount to the bottom of the bottle? Also did our trucks not come with one stock?

Yse, mine has a connection for the hose on teh bottom of the tank. Otherwise, I think the overflow hose just routed to teh bottom of the frame for dumping on the ground.

yes, the line runs to the bottom of the bottle.....this allows the system to syphon fluid from the bottom when under vaccum, and push fluid into the overflow bottle when under pressure (hot).
I often wonder if having the bottle improves your cooling ability.....if only a little, because it ensures more of a closed system, allowing for a better pressurized system (raises boiling point), and it also allows for the greatest amount of fluid to be in the system at all times.....rather than the system going to equilibrium based off of how much fluid was dumped during the last boil over |

You must also have a special rad. cap so that it will pull coolant back to rad. when it cools.

If you are not into originality, I used a overflow bottle mounted on the passenger side inner fenderwell, right behind the battery. There was a link to this, but I do not have it anymore. This wasn't my idea. Someone else might have it. It was from a mid-eighties Monte Carlo. It fit perfectly in that spot. I got it off E-bay for a total of 10 bucks delivered. Sorry I don't have a digital camera for pics, but believe me, it fit really good.

68stepped does it run in the bottom of tank also does it have a drain? does the hose run under the raditor to other side?

i converted my windsheild wiper fluid container into a radiator overflow ....
just ran a long tube from the overflow nipple down the bottom of the shroud and over to the bottle ... removed the mesh filter and .. it works great

These trucks didn't have this stock, nothing did back then...at least, they were just becomeing known in this era.
There is nothing wrong with going without. You aren't supposed to fill the rad to the top, an inch or so below the top iss all you need. Fill it up and let it puke, that is where you want the level. The added cooling ability... if any... will not be noticed. |

Longhorn's right... you don't need it, but I felt compelled to rig one anyway.
I think 53Burb is also correct that they used this style overflow bottle cap in the mid 80s Monte Carlos. The washer and overflow bottles shown here are the same. If you can find the overflow cap anywhere (GM part#340194, discontinued) you can make your own. Notice that the drain tube is larger than the overflow tube from the radiator. I think this is so when the rad burps the cap doesn't blow off the overflow bottle. Frank (PICKMUP) was the first I saw putting these together but he ran out of the caps before I could order one from him. I picked up this set of washer and overflow bottles from Wes. They came complete with mounting brackets, caps and hoses.
