How much rust
I was sent these pictures of a 4x4 that I'm interested in. They said the floorboards are good, but would these pics lead you to conclude otherwise? Seems like it would take a fair amount to get this much rust on the strips? Do you think patches will be needed?
Also, can you say the visor area is good based on the pic?

Re: How much rust
Ha no way to tell under the visor area without pulling it back, mine looked great, until the bondo was gone lol
Id have to guess by your area (Im NOT a rust expert or a bodyman or a rust repair man) But where you live, Id say it has rust SOMEWHERE on it lol

Re: How much rust
No one can say before pulling the mat up and seeing the actual floor. If I was guessing I'd say there's a chance the floor's ok.The problem will be either at the outer edge by the kick panel, around the front cab mount bolt area, under the door sill plates/door seal,or all the above. You may be able to tell from underneath.Look at the cab supports. That's where the floor an goes. Those door sill plates are just chromed steel. It doesn't take much for hose to rust. I've seen them rust in the GM wrappers.

Thanks guys. This truck is in the pacific northwest. I've requested more pics taken of the cab supports, rockers, floor, at ground level. Hopefully it checks out.

Re: How much rust
Ok, I got some more pics on this truck. Its a 70 gmc and the pics are below. Do you think I could find a stock survivor K20 with less rust in the $5000 dollar range?

Re: How much rust
One more pic. Really wish this truck was close enough to check out in person. Just thinking i should get some pics of the cab supports too to be safe. Sounds like they keep up on the maintenance in this- new tires, fluids, fuel pump. Other than the 350, its pretty original.

Re: How much rust
I my opinion you could find one nicer for the budget you have in mind.. these trucks are quite common in the NW.. from the pictures you have it will need at minimum rockers and cab corners, BUT from my experience if it needs those it will also need outer floor extensions, kickpanels and A piller patches.. the cab supports may or may not be good, either way you are looking at about $2500 worth of work (if you have to pay someone to do the work),
If you are serious about this one.. I would try to get someone to go take a look for you.. Or at least get some pictures of the cab supports.. inside kickpanels where they meet the floor, under the hood above the heatere, insided the cowl (to see if its full of pine needles) also pictures of the top of the drip rail to see if there is any seam sealer still present.. if its all cracked/dried and missing I personally would walk away.. (this will make it rust out above the windshield and down the door posts) |

Re: How much rust
Thanks Livrat but I've been watching craigs in your area and CA for months now and this was one of the best I have found for the price. Looking on the forums here and anything without rust and 4x4 is listed for 7500 or more!
What do others think?

Re: How much rust
Hey Vintage,
There is a 72 K10 over where I live that looks to be in great shape (at least from the outside). I'll drive by tonight to see if it is still for sale, and grab a phone number for you. Last I remember, they are asking $4500ish for it. |
