removing cab
i picked up a 68 shortbed for parts but having trouble with removing the cab. the driver front bolt isn't just rounded off, it has rust the parts of the head off. i can't get a socket, wrench, or vice grips on it. i don't want to potentially cause more damage to it (cause somebody might need it) but how do i get this thing off?

Re: removing cab
You are removing the nut from underneath correct? I just removed a cab and the bolt head inside the cab was broken and welded in place.

Re: removing cab
from underneath it just spins. so i was trying to hold it from top side but the head is disformed from years of rust. i'm just using the frame and maybe bedsides from this anyway. i just didnt want to cause more damage than necesary in case it was usable for someone else

Re: removing cab
I'm doing this exact thing tomorrow morning. Gonna just cut the bolt at the bottom, the nut is rusted to the bolt. I have a wrench on the top and a breaker on the bottom and no go!
Don't forget to remove the small ground straps! Know why I say that? |

Re: removing cab
I used my angle grinder and dremel. Can't get the bolt off. so I cut a hole in the floor around it. There should be nothing holding this thing together to the rest of the cab!!!!! I don't understand why this point of the cab won't let go of the frame. The other 3 bolts were easy to come off. Just this freaking driver side front refuses to budge.

Re: removing cab
Put a cutoff wheel on the nut on the bottom and cut it off. I ground down probably 80% of the bolt, and I was just grinding the floor up. If you cut just the floorboard you still have a rail underneath the cab that is attached. You have to cut thru that too.
It took one cutting wheel to get the nut off the bolt and the whole thing snapped for me. Almost an hour total, over 30 minutes just grinding that head off the bolt. Wish I had just used the cutting wheel from the start! |

yea I tried the sawzall and had a hard time getting thru the nut, so just used the cutting wheel on the nut / bolt and BAM! all done.
