New guy needs info

Hey guys I've been checking this site out and its great. I got a 64 that I traded for and then found more bondo than I was expecting any here are some pics of what I got. My question is what parts should I replace I have complete rockers and cab mounts. And should I brace the doorway up before cutting the old stuff out. Thanks for the help.

I'd fire up a grinder or wirebrush and find out how far that crap goes before making a decision. You may be on the hook for some floor pans and definately a clutch petal cover.

Re: New guy needs info

Welcome to the forums from Kansas City, KS.

First off, start with bracing the doors with 1" square tubing across the door opening at 6" up from the door sill. Second, with a pointed body hammer or like object, tap around the perimeter of the rusty areas, to determine where the bad stuff ends and the good stuff begins. Locate the spot welds around the perimeter of the outer rocker panels, center punch them and drill them out with a spot-weld cutter. After the outer rockers are off, you will have a good look at the inner rocker panel and a better idea of what needs to be replaced.

At this time, if your budget allows, have the entire cab media blasted. By doing so, you will remove all the rust and start with good material. I would then cut out the damaged areas. From what I see in the photos, you will need front floorboards, kick panels and outer rocker panels...you may also need inner rocker panels.

There many sources for these panels, however "let the buyer beware" because all patch panels are not created equal. Here is a list of suppliers of aftermarket parts for the '60-'66 Chevy trucks:

www.bowtiebits.com
www.lmctruck.com
www.classicparts.com
www.oldchevytrucks.com
www.ecklerstrucks.com
www.gspp.com
www.truckandcarshop.com
www.harmons.com
www.oldmusclecars.com
www.classicchevroletparts.com
www.classicindustries.com
www.bobschevytrucks.com
www.brotherstrucks.com
www.mar-k.com
www.wheelvintiques.com
www.totallystainless.com
www.earlyclassic.com
www.horkeyswoodandparts.com
www.raybuck.com
www.americanclassic.com
www.yogisinc.com
www.rbsauto.com
www.obschevy.com
www.cheyennepickup.com
www.chevypickupparts.com

I just bought floorboards, kick panels and outer rockers from www.lmctruck.com and I was happy with the overall quality, fit and finish. Be prepared to do some old-fashioned fabricating, body-dollying and wire-welding, in order to make things work properly.

In closing, there are a number of great build threads, explaining this process in a very informative way, so I encourage you to do a search of the site for this information.

Good luck with your project and keep us posted of your progress with lots of photos.

PS-I would start with the panel replacement Play-by-Play in Alan's Classic signature. Sorry Alan, your thread slipped my mind.

I agree with both the previous post. Once you removed all the rust the holes will be alot bigger and you will know for sure what all is needed. Have you done any panel replacement before? Go thru my build in my signature and you will see what I went thru. BTW Welcome to a cool place. Post you progress and pix.

Welcome fromt Tennessee!
I agree with the advice of checking out other build threads. There's a lot of good info from "been there, done that" members.
Ask questions, post pics.

Dirtygrunt:

It looks like you are making some good progress. I find that if I remove all the ugly stuff, it helps with the big picture.

As far as I know, there is no patch panel for the lower "B" pillar, however, some of the cab corners wrap all the way around, to meet the rocker, so they may cover most of the damaged area and get you close enough to custom fabricate some infill pieces. Before purchasing any replacement panels, make sure you talk to a customer service tech and ask them if the cab corners are specifically for the '60-'66 Chevy trucks and are the "full-wrap" style.

I have had good luck with:

www.lmctruck.com for floor pans & kick panels

www.classicparts.com for floor pans and rockers

wwwtruckandcarshop.com for all body panels

Keep us posted on your progress and before you know it, you will have all the bad gone and start bringing your cab back to life.

Inch by inch, life is a cinch.

Thanks for the link. I don't know if anyone has ordered this part or not but if I get part 6 would I still need to get inner rockers thanks.

Re: New guy needs info

Yes, that will replace your entire inner rocker. I ended up not buying it but it would make my repairs a lot easier/quicker.

Also, as Tony said, AFAIK the B pillar panel is not reproduced at this time.
