Hey guys i was wondering if you guys truck passes the smog check? if not what do you guys do? whats year do truck don't longer need a smog check?

1975 and older no biannual smog test. If I buy something newer then 1975 it's new.

I had a few cars later then 75, but no later then 81 when things got real bad. Then I wouldn't consider anything till 87 or so.

Me I never had the not passing issue except for a couple small issues. So it was a no brainer.

75 and older no longer need the smog check.

If I had a 81, and later I would seriously consider a updated swap. That way I could get out of the bad years with that computer controlled Q-jet.

As it currently stands the 77 will need it for years to come.

If you really want a pre-smog truck you gotta search CL. You could get a C20, and swap parts around for a C10. C20's seem to litter CL, and cheap compared to C10's.

If your looking for HP you can get away with about 1hp per cubic inch or 350-370hp on a 350sbc pretty easily.

Or you can go for a swap, and make sure it is legal. Or at least passes the function test portion. A shop I used let me pass on function, and ignore the visual part.

When you do an engine swap in California your supposed to smog to the newest part.If your truck is a 72 and your motor is a 2009 the bureau of automotive repair will put a aluminum sticker in your door jam and your supposed to upgrade your title at the same time.Your 72 chevy is now registered as a 2009 and all rules apply per 2009.

NOBODY does this of course but if you buy a truck like this be prepared for 6 months of fun at the DMV and lots of out of pocket cash as well.I have first hand experience with this nightmare.

If your truck is a 77 I am assuming it has a catalytic convertor on it.The quickest easiest way to pass smog is to weld a brand new cat on drive the truck for 30 miles on the freeway and smog it immediately.

I read on here were someone tweaked a carb and reduced hydrocarbons 1300 ppm I also read about the easter bunny and santa claus so take these posts for what they are.

reason im ask is because i have a 1977'GMC c10 and i guess the last owner swap the engine and took off alot of parts.Idk whether is worth putting money on my truck since it dosent passes the smog.Right now my truck is on NON-OP car.

If you want to keep the truck rive to a pick-n-pull and get all the missing parts.You can't beat the prices and it will allow you to pass the visual.
Next take it down to a test only facility and ask the guy if he will look at it for you.He can tell you what is missing or needs replacing before you spend anymore money.
I would then give it a tune-up set the timing change the oil and filter and see if it passes.
If not do the cat.

Not only do you need to pass the visual (no missing smog parts) but if he put any kind of cam or it's not a well sealed engine you may not pass the tail pipe even after you replace all the parts. Be prepared to spend a couple thou, it may be better to get a different truck.

Pay a hundred dollars and have someone pass it for you. Usually the cheapest way in the long run.

In Calif the seller is financially liable for the vehicle to pass smog. You have recourse for him to fix or give your money back
Or buy a pre smog truck and use this one for parts

well the engine bay is missing alot of stuff. what are some part for the smog? or does everything has to be original? pics would help.

You'll need to find out specifics for 1977 1/2 ton but my smog exempt 1975 has the AIR pump which pumps air to the exhaust manifolds, single exhaust pipe with catalytic converter, EGR in the intake mani, there are sending units in the intake that have vac lines to them, the air cleaner is set up with the hot air something or another, lots of vacumm lines for who knows what smog devices. Fortunatelly all that is coming off on a pre smog truck. You have your work cut out for you. Good luck.

the shop I recently took my truck to, said that cali is going to lift the year to 1980, so anything prior to 1980 wont need smog. anyone else hear of this?

When the law originally was approved they were supposed to change the year every year.
So if a 73 was exempt one year a 74 would be exempt the next year then a 75 the year after that and so on.
As this is 2013 the exempt year should already be up to 1991-1992 as they promised us 21 or 22 years then no smog.
Unfortunately they are politicians and they are supposed to lie to get something passed then they are supposed to lie again when they change everything later.

I doubt you can use the open element air cleaner on a 77 truck and the stuff on the right side in minor.Do you have a air pump on it?

It would be on the passenger side under the air conditioner compressor or the alternator.

Shouldn't the A/C compressor be on top on the driver side?
