12 bolt rebuild

Hi guys, one of the initial steps I’m planning on taking is pulling my rearend and rebuilding it.

Intent is to inspect the axles to ensure they can be reused, add an Eaton posi, replace the axle bearings, and pinion bearing. The truck is an original i6 so I already had 3.73 gear back there which is perfect.

I also plan to prime and paint the rear (flat black), replace the rear brake drums/cylinders/hardware.

Then reinstall with 5” drop springs, new shocks, adj panhard, and shock extenders.

Just wanted to start a thread to see if anyone had any further recommendations while I have everything apart.

Thank you

Re: 12 bolt rebuild

I just did mine and used a crush sleeve eliminator kit. I also installed a Eaton and new bearings. Get the book How to rebuild 12 bolt Chevy rear. https://www.amazon.com/Chevy-Differe.../dp/1613251610
It is a big help. Dial indicator and other tools are a must.
