The Diffference between the 67-72 Chevy Trucks (Year Breakdown Version)

I put this together from this thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=323797 from which most things were cut and pasted.

I am attempting to make a table that will give a somewhat easy reference for the differences between the truck years. In doing this I have learned that there is almost as much uncertainty as there is fact. I would like this to become an ongoing database that people add to. If someone offers something new in a reply and someone can confirm it, I'll go back and edit the table. If someone has a suggestion to make it easier to read or organize, please let me know. Thanks to GOPAPA who put the first thread together and to those that contributed to that one.

---------------------------------------

For those of you who are learning about these trucks, it's fairly easy to tell what year they are. The six years of production, from 1967 to 1972, are divided up into three groups of two years. We have the '67-'68 trucks, the '69-'70s and the '71-72s.

1967 - 1968
Easy initial Differentiation: Slanting hood front with "C-H-E-V-R-O-L-E-T" spelled out across front in chrome letters. Large rectangular grille openings with Bowtie in center of grille.

'67 - '68 Unique: Pull handle parking brake, throttle was controlled through mechanical linkage, bench seats offered full-depth foam and a tip-forward design and the 1968 Custom package could include a cloth interior and padded door panels, bearing type ashtray, door hinge differences from later years

'67 : Bowtie fender emblems, Small back window ("Panoramic window option [Big Window]), No side marker reflectors/lights, unique vent wing knobs, unique exterior door handles (mounting screw angles), Outward dimpled rail for ashtray that is straight, power steering was a ram-style system, unique ignition bezel style, unique armrests (different mounting screw angle), may not have dimple in frame to accomodate power steering box, K series trucks used the closed knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes, some base models only had driver's side visor, interior knobs screw on

Engine options: 250ci and 292ci I6, 283ci and small journal 327 V8, 351ci V6 only in GMC

Transmission options: 3 speed manual, 3 speed manual with OD on 1/2 ton only, 4 speed manual, powerglide and Turbo Hydra-matic automatics

Trim Levels: C/10, Custom/10, CST/10; GMC 1500 Custom 1500 Super Custom 1500

'68 : 50th Anniversary Truck option (this one has been lowered, interior), Side marker reflectors, Introduced Longhorn, early production could have '67 style ignition bezel, may not have dimple in frame to accomodate power steering box, K series trucks used the closed knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes, indented arched bearing ashtray guide

Engine options: 250ci and 292ci I6, 307ci , large journal 327ci, and 396 V8, 351ci V6 only in GMC

Transmission options: 3 speed manual, 3 speed manual with OD on 1/2 ton only, 4 speed manual, powerglide and Turbo Hydra-matic automatics

Trim Levels: C/10, Custom/10, CST/10; GMC 1500 Custom 1500 Super Custom 1500

1969 - 1970
Easy Initial Differentiation: Upright hood front with Chevrolet Bowtie in center, Aluminum grille bar with "CHEVROLET" spelled out. Parking lights in grille bar. Model/series fender emblems.

'69 - '70 Unique:

'69 : Introduced Blazer, foot operated parking brake, crate style grill insert, K series trucks used the closed knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes, indented arched bearing ashtray guide

Engine options: 250ci and 292ci I6, 307ci, 350ci, and 396 V8; 351ci V6 only in GMC (dropped midyear)

Transmission options: 3 speed manual, 3 speed manual with OD on 1/2 ton only, 4 speed manual, powerglide and Turbo Hydra-matic automatics

Trim Levels: C/10, Custom/10, CST/10; GMC 1500 Custom 1500 Super Custom 1500

'70 : Introduced Jimmy, foot operated parking brake, luvered grille insert, K series trucks switched to the open knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes, indented arched bearing ashtray guide

Engine options: 250ci and 292ci I6, 307ci , 350ci, and 402ci V8(called 400)

Transmission options: 3 speed manual, 4 speed manual, powerglide and Turbo Hydra-matic automatics

That got a lot larger than I thought it would be. Maybe it's not easier to read. Let me know if this is just a wasted effort.

Re: The Diffference between the 67-72 Chevy Trucks (Table Version)

I believe that my 67 CST 1/2 ton came factory with a 327cid and a TH400 transmission.
I don't see that as an option for 67.
Great job on the list. I never really knew how to tell the 69's from the 70's before.

Thank you for posting this table.

i don't know why i was thinking you would show the differences in sheetmetal pics (kinda like an LMC). Then again i guess i could look at an LMC.

still a good thread

good info. just breaking your balls here but that isnt a table.
needs Pics to really make it useful. A lot of that stuff only helps if you know what you are talking about.
ie what is a 67 style ignition bezel?

I'm learning a lot just by doing this and honestly I have no idea myself. I just put it together from the other thread. I'll take my laptop to work with me tonight and see if I can't create hyperlinks with pics for most of the differences. Work computers are protected by Barracuda, a royal pain in the rump.

67 bezel now has a hyperlink to a pic.

Title changed.

Thanks. It did end up being a little more than I thought it was going to be. You've been here a while. Please make suggestions or additions if you have any. My biggest concern is disinformation. I'm going to do my best but the community can be a big help.

In looking around the net, GMC made a 305 and a 351 V6. Now I have to figure out if it was a 305 typo, or truely a 351.

Re: The Diffference between the 67-72 Chevy Trucks (Table Version)

Cool table. Just a few notes. I have a '67 K/10 Suburban, it has a slide ashtray [which is not compatable with the slide ashtray in my '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 4x4 ''Custom''.] My '68 C/10 Stepside has the ball-bearing ashtray -- called the "Deluxe Ashtray" on the build sheet, which has since disintegrated and lost itself, but not mentioned on the SPID.
Also GM for whatever reason refered to inline engines as "L6s'' back in the day, not 'I6s' which Ford uses. Now GM calls them I6s too, but if you want pure historical accuracy, say "Ell Six." The Iron Duke 152 CuIn was an L4, but not a truck option in the '67 - '72 period.

Yep 305 and 351 V6's. I think 69 or 70 was the last year you could get either in a pickup though.

Re: The Diffference between the 67-72 Chevy Trucks (Table Version)

I like the idea but the multiple colors are (to me) a negative to taking it seriously.
Deciding how to present the info is difficult.
I would look at a relaxed standard US book style format and use that until a better idea came along.
I'd also use USA capitalization rules. Capitalize the first letter of a sentence, proper nouns, and not much else. Basically, when in doubt, don't. Same with commas.

Yeah, initially the I put the colors to try to make it easy to go from one year's subcategory to another to see if there were differences, but it does look a little amateur.

As far as the capitals and such, I do a lot of start and stop typing and adding things to one spot and going to another, so that'll explain a lot of the punctuation errors. I do plan on proof reading it in 16 years when I finally finish it. Punctuation is a lost art.

1969 GM Heritage website information kit only lists 250/292 six cylinders and 307/350/396 V8's. There is no mention of a 327. Can anyone verify yes or no?

Re: The Diffference between the 67-72 Chevy Trucks (Table Version)

Th400 and power glide only auto offered in 67 and 68, the special air vent handles( lower) only on 67-68, 67 used different control knobs on dash than 68-72, no 327 in 69. 283 & 327 only v 8 offered in 67. 283 replaced by 307 in 68, 396 offered first year in trucks in 68. 396, 307, 350 offered in 69. In 70 396 badged as 400 but could still be list on spid as 396. 71 /72 badged as 400 CID but actually 402 cid. No th400 offered ever in 4x4 in these year model trucks only th350. Th350 and th400 use same spid call out, and only diff. On spid being a star for 2wd drive trucks. No custom deluxe, Cheyenne or super offered in 70. C10, custom or cst only. Cst replaced in 71 with Cheyenne, same trim level, c10 replaced with custom as low level, custom deluxe mid level , Cheyenne high option. April of 71 super officially introduced, and becomes top of line.

By "special air vent handles" are you referring to the ones down in the kick panels?
