The Great Rescue Of A 72_C-30!!

After the board meet in Indy, I went back to Memphis to remove my 9 foot step truck from a body man that lost interest and had even less talent.

First are a couple pics of what it looked like when I first got there. Everytime I called him he said "I just about ready to finish it up for ya". From the amount of crap in front of the gate, he was going to get to it next year?!!
The bad wreck was a head on crash by a drunk driver coming back from the casinos in Tunica MS. (you can see my truck in background)

She is safe and sound near my side in Wisconsin, where I can save up and have the body work completed correctly (see vent post in paint and body )

He finally got it dug out where we could get it out in the open to do some work to it. During the back out process, it hit a jagged piece of metal and blew out the passenger front tire.

I had one new tire (on the front), then bought another new matching 10 ply tire for the blow out. The new ones went on the rear and the ones with 3/4 tread went to the front.

I had to buy the bolts and mount the bed, install the rear fenders, put the ladder rack on, run a gas line to a 5 gallon gas can (I took out the behind seat gas tank, intending to install the 72 Suburban tank I have under rear frame rails). Get the truck running, load in bed extra rear fenders, 9 foot bed sides, bed supports, front panel and tailgate, also extra 71-72 grille assembly.

Then I had the fun task of trying to put a one ton truck on a car dolly

Lets just say it can be done. May not be the safest since the truck doesn't sit in the wheel pads (it sits on the outside raised area of the bowl where the wheels should sit). WARNING: Do not try this at home, stunt performed by a certified crazy nutcase with no other options available!!.

As you can see, a little 1/2 ton Dodge with the 3.7 L (V6), is not a prefered canidate to tow dolly a 1 ton Chevy

Well it made it. I never went faster than 50 MPH on the interstate and never went faster than 30 MPH in towns. I left more than enough stopping distance to vehicles in front too

Thanks for reading my saga, and no doubt, it will continue

Don't forget to check out my post in Paint and Body for the whole story and more pics!

looks great! keep your goal in mind and stick with it! that truck is awesome. for those of you unaware of such things there were just over 1500 of these trucks produced in 72 and most of the survivors are all beat to hell as these were true work horses. this truck is a real piece of history and would take home quite a few trophys from the shows before the paint even dries. that bed looks great!i wish i could make you an offer you could not refuse on your spare bedsides. these bedsides are not reproduced aftermarket-they are available via salvage only. keep up the determination and stick with it. i look at these trucks as a real historical artifact. believe me you will have people everywhere you go with that truck wanting to buy it from you. definately keep us posted!!

Thanks for all the kind replies. It's frustrating when all there are is setbacks that cost a lot of money. You don't know how many times I considered just leaving it in Memphis, because I didn't have the extra $600 or so to go get it. Now I have to pay $40.00/month for storage

$40 a month for storage?
does it run? drive it over here & we can switch tanks. nothing like seeing a piece of American history rolling down interstate.
BTW, still smells, trying hard & not giving up.

WOW Don! That truck has come a long way since I saw it last. Looks great. I must say I had my doubts about it when I picked up "REB" from you. You are really making a nice truck out of it. I only wish I was at the same stage with REB. (which still has no body on it) Keep up the good work! Oh by the way, REB will remain a GMC, lol.

Thank you lord Jesus!! HuggerCST has seen the light, and walks with GMC

Yeah, that truck was ready for the scrap metal recycler when I first got it. The whole rust free/dent free front clip came from a board member in AZ, Ricks pick-up parts helped with new front bumper, lenzes, weather strip, handles, dash pad, etc. Teeitup helped with door panels, bumper guards. Tim Christian helped with a new motor from his sons truck, JQ-72 helped with another replacement 9 foot step bed, I'm using the cab support bushings you were wanting, your outer rocker panels were ruined by the body man. New tires from Firestone, correct 6cyl with PB aircleaner assembly from Burnsman, correct chrome hub caps from Ebay, etc, etc, etc....

If only the body work was done right, I'd actually have me something here

don, i was just wondering what you know about the correct bedsides for these trucks as i am looking for a pair. i've been told that the bedsides from any 9footer 60-72 are "correct" although the fender attachment holes are wrong. i was skeptical but i went down to the local high dollar book store and found a copy of the 67-72 parts interchange manual and low and behold it says the bedsides interchange for 60-72 chevy or gmc! just wondering if you might be able to verify. thanks-sean
ps i've spoken to a guy thru hemmings services that swears he can make new bedsides..but he wants ALOT of money. i think i will hold out until i get everything else complete before i go the fabrication route-just fyi

Sean,

I had no idea that 9 foot steps were made prior to 67 until you mentioned it. I looked in my"Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks" and low and behold it mentions under 1 ton commercial 133"WB a step side truck beginning in 1960. It's a C3604 model with over 4000 production I do suppose the bedsides will interchange. Now I want to find a 60-66 with a factory 9 foot step, lol!!

Of course beginning in 67 the model for 9 fooot long step side 1 ton trucks were CS31004. No mention of these trucks are made after 72 however.

The fenders on 60-66 were different and won't bolt on to our (67-72 beds sides) and the step boards were different because of the fender shape, but I dont see what difference other than mounting holes could be present. Heck, the tailgates will interchange from 1960 up to (what 1979?).

If you can locate manufactoring of these beds today, that may be a feasable alternative to junk yard parts. How much did Hemmings want for the bed sides?

Don

Well DT if you don't want to pay storage I can come out and pay you to take it off your hands. LOL Although $40 a month is good incentive to finish it up. good luck, now it's close enough to cuddle before you go to bed at night.

don, the vendor from hemmings said his prices usually start at around $1000 per each part of that size but he prefers to work from a pattern or some sort of build sheet or "blueprint". that was just an estimate. if i went that route eventually i would still need to locate some bedsides to use as a pattern. i do have a guy in oklahoma that has promised to sell me the bed from that 68 c-30 wrecker that board member groundflyer posted here not long ago. he bought it on ebay from groundflyer and then groundflyer put him in contact with me because the guy said he wanted to convert it to a flatbed. i have not heard from the guy in over a month though and he said he would have it ready in a week so i may be sol on that deal. it is interesting that the bedsides down to 1960 are supposed to interchange although i am still skeptical. at least it may give me a wider range of possibilities but can you imagine what a 9ft stepside from 60 would look like? i bet one of those would really be beat to hell. i also looked up the tailgates for stepside trucks and these actually interchange back to 1954 according to the interchange. anyway i have alot of work to still do on my c-30 and am in no hurry. so have alot of time to locate those bedsides or a complete bed. but i must admit i've been ACTIVELY looking for almost two years and have managed to locate only the stepboards so i'm starting to get worried i may never find a bed.

I bet a good body man could build those bedsides. Theres not much to them really.....you would need an extra shortbed (bedside).

Yeah I looked in to that too. You would have to start with an 8 foot stepside bed, then graft 6" to both the front and the back of it. That's what really makes thenm unique, they are not like a Longhorn bed where they grafted just to the front the bed. Another thing is these beds were not grafted longer, they were made to be 9 foot long from the factory with one piece of metal, so there are no seams.

Sean, you will have first dibs on my extra 9 foot step bed if I ever decide to part with it. The whole truck is first yours if you want it.

Dwaite, thanks for the offer, but I want to at least finish putting it together and drive it to next years board meet in Vegas before letting it go

i appreciate that offer and i may take you up on that offer eventually. in the mean time it sounds like grafting the bedsides may be more trouble than its worth. i'll just keep looking and hoping and i'll give you top dollar for those bedsides if you ever want to part with them or need the cash. i would love the whole truck to. as soon as i'm able i'll post my 67 c-30 and its progress.

don if you ever decide you want or need to get rid of your truck i'm still gonna try to talk you into keeping it. thats the kind of truck you would regret selling the second the money and title changed hands. i sold a 71 super once when i really needed cash and i regret it everyday!
also don i was wondering if you could tell me as many differences as you know in the 9ft vs 8ft stepside beds. i know the sides and the stepboards are longer. i think the stepboards because of their length require 2 supports each instead of just 1 that bolt to the first 2 forward cross sills. this must also mean that the first 2 forward cross sills and not simply the first must have bolt holes to accomodate the support brackets. also i'm wodering if the rear or intermediate chassis wiring harness (to the taillights, liscence lamp) is somehow longer. anything you can add is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance-sean.

You are 100% corrct on that. The first 2 forward cross sills have threaded holes in them to accept the step board braces. (I think 8 foot step boards have 2 supports as well). I do know the metal strips between the wood in the bed are one piece, 9 foot long. This creates a problem because there are not ant aftermarket sources for these. I can't tell you about the wiring, because mine has been so cobbled up by previous owners, but I would guess that the under the bed harness is longer to the quick disconnects. The tail light and back-up harness simply plugs in to the main rear harness. Other than that, I didn't see muck more differences, except the rear fenders had 2 each supports from frame to outboard side of fender, (the short step I had and disassembled only had one support from frame to REAR outboard side of fender.

I know all about getting rid of something I souldn't have. I traded a 67 Mustang coupe that had every possible factory and dealer option on it. Even had a factory installed tilt/tilt away steering wheel that wasn't an option until 68. Had all original paper work including window sticker. I traded it for a 73 Glastron Carlson, 455 powered jet boat that was supposed to have been used in James Bond "Live And Let Die" movie. What a piece of floating, money sucking, sh!t that was

TTT, I've had several board members in the past several months asking to see better pictures of the truck in my avatar. All my original pictures are in my old lappy (bad mother board). The truck is still in Milwaukee, covered in snow, and surrounded with other vehicles etc. I decided the only way to show these pictures, is to bring this thread back.

I bought a replacement 72 non-a/c from board member john@thepier. He had it saved from a truck he parted that came from California, so there is no rust repair/welding needed. I started working the couple dents out of it and painting before the snow started to fall.

You can go to CompUSA and buy a little case that will fit a 2.5" laptop hard drive for $20-30 if you want to back up your data. Basically, you install the laptop hard drive into the case and connect the case to your computer with a USB or firewire cable.

I can provide more info if this is something you'd be interested in. I dunno how important your data is, but I'd love to see pics of the truck.

Well, I'm happy to help. Here's everything you need (I've been working with computers forever):

CompUSA:
http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...123&pfp=SEARCH

Any of these style cases will work. It has to be made for a 2.5" drive or it won't fit your laptop drive.

Remove your laptop drive from the laptop. Follow the directions on the hard drive case from CompUSA to hook it up.

IMPORTANT: Dropping or even setting down your laptop harddrive with any force will kill it. They're incredibly sensitive to shock - from dropping, bumping or static sparks/discharge.

If you can provide me with a brand and model number for your computer, I can find out the exact location of your hard drive and explain how to remove the drive. Usually only takes a set of jeweler's screwdrivers to remove the drive.

Once you mount the drive in the case, you can attach it to any computer with USB ports and access the data - you're basically turning your laptop hard drive into a portable hard drive. It's a very useful contraption.

Even dead laptops usually fetch a couple hundred bucks on eBay. The laptop hard drive and screen are worth $200-300 alone.
