Re-keying ignition switch - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I ordered a lock set, doors were a peice of cake to change out. Trying to figure out how to change out ignition tumbler set. Anyone know how to do this?

Insert original key into ignition, turn counter clockwise to accessory position. Place an unbent paperclip or small allen wrench into that little hole above the key hole, and depress the spring loaded plate. While doing this, you'll want to turn the key further to the left and a little tugging will help too. Sometimes it pops right out, other times it'll make you feel like a moron.
If it is a 67/early 68, and has no accossory position, then you start with the ignition in the off position and poke it....ect.

If there is no original key, then it gets real fun with hammers and screw drivers and lots of words we aren't able to say on here. (I have a write up in the FAQ for this one)

I just performed this removal yesterday only I widened the hole with a small bit and the cordless drill to see the press button. Switch is in good shape. Brought it in the shop and cleaned it up. Gonna save it and order a new tumbler for it.

This board is the best. I had been screwing with that thing for like 2 hours. After I read the reply to my post I had the old tumbler assembly out and the new one in within 10 minutes. Thanks Longhorn.

At least you didn't damage anything in that first 2 hrs. That's all that's important. Well....onless you dripped blood into the carpet..then getting that cleaned up is what's important.
