Got hit in the 68 yesterday!
What a Mother's Day! Went to get some munchies for Mom's Day, and got broad-sided by a bunch of drunk punks joy riding mommies 2001 Mustang GT convertible!
I followed them for a bit to let dispatch know where they were going, and stopped after some time. They came back! Although a little touch-and-go for a while, I managed to get the insurance card from one of the scared female passengers. The driver fled on foot when he heard that the police would be here soon (I volunteer for the sheriff's office). The other dude in the car that was getting lippy with me jumped behind the wheel and took off, leaving the driver in the field! I got in with one trooper and drove the area until we found the guy about 20 minutes later. I at least got the satisfaction of putting my knee in the back of his neck while by buddy handcuffed him. I still don't know if the other guy was caught or not. Charges on the driver: DUI (his 3rd), habitual traffic offender, driving under revocation (re: last DUI), and leaving the scene. The male passanger, when caught, will be charged with obstruction and leaving the scene, and DUI if they caught him early enough while still behind the wheel. Going tomorrow for estimates from 3 of our best body shops. BTW... when I bought her, I put basic liability coverage on her just in case something happened to her in the shop while building her. Just last Thursday, I upgraded it to full coverage! But, I have already talked to the car owner's insurance company, and they are covering 100% of the damage. So, if there's any good news, I guess that's it. That, and my Brother and I were not hurt. Just my pride! Damage includes: Cab, door, left inner and outer fender, fender emblem and marker light, bumper and bumper brackets. The right fender has a large crease from when the bumper got ripped forward on the left, it got pushed into the right fender pretty hard. Oh yeah, the Mustang is HOSED!!!

Think of it this way... INSURANCE! Take the money, do the repairs yourself, pocket a chunk of change. It doesn't make it all better, but it does surely help.

Glad you were not hurt. Stinks about the truck, but like the Phoenix it will enjoy a greater rebirth than the one you just gave it.

idiot drivers
things like this are the reason why I am hesitant to do any body work. the last 3 cars I did restorations on got buggered by idiot drivers. '66 Impala destroyed by little old lady who can't turn. '77 Impala broadsided by DORK crossing 2 lanes & trying to get in mine while I was there. '84 Grand Prix with $4000 paint job (custom & unmatchable) smashed by moron backing his motorhome while mine was parked legally & un-occupied.

Thats to bad, but look on the bright side, its not anything to major. The lack of respect from the two guys is the thing that pisses me off. Be a man and take responsiblities for your actions. My .02

Thanks alot guys!! I think my pride was hurt worse than the truck. Nothing major to repair, just some sheet metal. You can kind of see in the pic of the bumper, I had 72 4x4 upper bumper brackets (the L brackets) on just to keep the carrage bolts in place. Thus, they were not bolted to the frame cause the holes didn't line up. I think that may have saved some potential frame damage.
I'm taking here to some very good body shops tomorrow for estimates. I think I will take the insurance money and do everything myself. I will probably replace both doors, both fenders, and hood. I may not get enough from the insurance company to do all that, but it should make a big dent in it at least. Stay tuned, she WILL rise again!!!!!

Well, glad no one was hurt, and it is awsome that your ride just got a flesh wound.
It coulda been something like this one...some of the newer members may see me refer to the first longhorn, or the blue longhorn, or longhorn #1...this is her. |

The frames bend real easily on front end damage. look where your bumper is mounted...nothing to protect your frame.

I like what you were doing with the front fenders and hood trim. It does look better deleted like a '67. The hood and eyebrow chrome icing always dings easy and looks bad once dinged. I hope you get it back together right.

Anyhow, my insurance company said they will take care of me and get my truck fixed, them go after their insurance company and him directly. This is only the first major claim I have been to them with, but for little stuff like glass replacement and my wifes car getting keyed once, they have always been top-notch.

Do I hear the sounds of new sheet metal being delivered?

Bummer dude, I know how you feel. I hope your damage is not "life threatening". Mine will be easily fixable, and I guarantee that she will return a much sweeter ride!
