I'm just curious. I have heard this many times and I'm assuming that it more than just good looks. Educate me! Thanks

I love these trucks for the great style and the body lines. And the fact that they are easy to work on and relatively affordable for a classic.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

You've heard the ads stating how many GM trucks are still on the road? These are the trucks that makes that true. First of all GM got it right from day-1. Sales sky rocketed from '67 and increased with every year through '72. They definitely got the look right...stylish yet tough. Just square enough to look stout and rounded enough to look like smooth operators. The line expanded in response to a market in demand of more from a truck, from options,to power,to driveability,to comfort,to the first full size sport utility(Blazer/Jimmy),to the larger Suburbans with a side door,to a full line of RV models and options for trucks. Add to that how well they've held up and how easy to keep on the road they've been. Then, figure these are the trucks from the height of the muscle car era and what looks good on a muscle car looks good on these trucks. Then figure in the gas embargo of '73 which turned the direction of the auto market and you have the last trucks from the good ole days. At least that's how I always figured it.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

I think its a combination of looks, the longevity, the number built, common parts, etc.

It's pretty crazy that there are about ten of these trucks withing a one mile radius of my house that I've noticed. Then again, I must be in car nut heaven since I can't drive out of the subdivision w/o going past 6 houses with classic cars or trucks.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

My neighbor/friend/mechanic has been around since these were released and he told me the other day that the popularity of these trucks exploded so heavily because they were the first truck model not designed to just be a work truck. These years were the first that were actually intentionally made comfortable, the previous truck generations were for functionality only.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

well better than all the previous years: ''one hand'' tailgate latch, bath tub inner fenders for the front, a choice of metal or wood floor for the fleetside beds, more squared rear inner fenders, full double wall bed sides and double wall tailgate is what my 67 dealer brouchere says, for the fleetside pick ups.for the cab: first year for a low, medium and high level options package(c/10, custom/10, CST/10) ,first year for buckets, ''saftey keyed instrument panle'',''custom feature accessories''and new dual master cylinder brake system with warning light. i think it is the first year for a 4wd? (without getting a NAPCO conversion).

and like mentioned above good looks and there is somthin great about each year!

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

^ Not the first year 4wd. That was back in the Taskmasters. 60-66 4wds were available from factory. It's more a matter of the timing of when these trucks came out with he public more accepting of a truck as respectable transportation and GM doing a great job of responding to that demand.

HEY! What's this thread doing in "Projects and Builds" anyway? I thoght I lost my mind looking for this in the "message board",where it belongs, for a long time this morning. I couldn't figure out where it went and finally searched my posts and found it here. Go figure...Maybe a mod could move it.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

because the 73 up rot looking at them..
and after 72 the epa took hold..
I bought mine because the epa and feds can't make up their minds on year cut off's for emissions..
that and these have the long arm rear set up..
I haven't seen a 73 with coils . and 72 might have been the last year that a truck didn't ride like a truck untill, yuppies made trucks the soccermom vehicle of choice

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

Well, the easiest way to answer this is by looking at everyone trucks.
I liken our trucks to the 55-57 shoebox Chevys. Ours have an absolute timeless design and are a relative ease to work on, plus you can easily convert and Upgrade the entire drive-train and suspension by obtaining those parts from other trucks and without seriously breaking the bank. Plus, you can make it look like whatever you want. You can tube it, leave it Pure stock or even Rat Rod it, they always look GOOD. With our trucks we have the best of both worlds; You can have HUGE horsepower or you can have a 235 Thirftmaster. You can practically do just about anything (except chop the top) and it'll still look good.

In short, They are American Icons.

It's a huge range on the "Whys" with our trucks. For me it was LOVE at first site. And after looking at all the Muscle cars and other year trucks ABSOLUTLY NOTHING comes close to the design of a '68. It's Clean and it has the Best face on the planet..........But that's just my opinion.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

why I chose a 67 c-10
I love muscle cars
I love classic cars
I love my classic boat
I need a truck
I don't have a bunch of time or money to modify a 48-54 chevy truck. Ifs, power disc brakes, and driveline. Just to make it a safe reliable dd.
these truks are basically the best bang for your buck when looking for a classic truck you can use as a truck, hotrod, dd, muscle car or whatever you can use a car for.
interchangeability of parts makes upgrdes cheap and easy.
I don't know if it's been mentioned but these trucks look great!

Very well said. I had and used a 69 GMC as a work truck . Hauled lumber and all supplies to a work sites. It had a six with 3 speed manual.
Looked good doing the work. Fresh baby blue paint and a lumber rack.
I got complements quite often. That was 25 years ago in 1986
Today I'm restoring a 68 C10.Both of us retired now, but I know it will get complements.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

i think its just a matter of personal opinion an what ya grew up with. an '87 was my first truck and i have an '82 now so the 80's styles are my preference, i still LOVE the 67-72's tho an wouldnt mind having one at all. an i was born in '90 so all of them were built well before my time :P

i have an '01 Z71 as well, and aside from modern comforts and features, the older trucks are build SO much better.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

Like many others have said - the style is clean, yet stout and soft around the edges. I can stare at these trucks all day... and wonder what, or how things were back then - the miles traveled, the people they hauled.

Just yesterday I took 6 co-workers to lunch in my suburban. One guy joked and said "never thought i'd see a GPS and these electronics (for cell, CD player) in a '72 suburban."

I had returned from a 600 mile round trip on Monday this week - we drove through rain, snow, mountains, flat lands... with cargo, kids, my wife and mother. To this day, 39 years later, we use the '72 burb the same way it was intended to be used. Only difference is gas is now $3.65 a gallon instead $.25.

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

My 2 cents...the fact that they are still used as daily drivers, haulers, and work trucks, such as the grounds keepers in my apt complex drive one through here every Monday/tuesday for the last 4 years and counting, its banged up but still running strong. and yeah they all rock for looks!!!

added; maybe I get a picture of it

Re: What makes these years (67-72) better?

Looks is a huge part, but just think how many are still on the road. If you don't beat 'em with a stick, these trucks will outlive all of us on here.

Further, if you looks at all the generations of Chevy trucks, this is the first of the truly modern-era trucks, yet they still retain their bulletproof nature. The best of all worlds, in other worlds.

And sometimes the stars align just right and a legend is born.
