parting will generally get you more money, but it takes a long time.

Re: is parting out worth it ?

Parting out can be somewhat of a hassle, just my experience.

Takes major time to disassemble everything and once you start, it's pretty much a parts truck.
When you sell, there's always tire kickers or those that can never decide if they want a part and you'll get a few absurdly low ball offers for parts that took you quite awhile just to pull off.

Then there's the packing and shipping aspect of it too.

I think I have more left over from every truck I've ever parted than I sold.

gotta give the props to those who do part em out, without them we'd be in trouble.

All comes down to 'whats your time worth' really.

Re: is parting out worth it ?

I bought a whole truck for $500 on Craigslist, kept a ton of parts that I needed, and then sold off everything else that I didn't need part by part....add it all up, I am somewhere around $700 and that is just selling things through Craigslist...I imagine I could of made a lot more if I used Ebay?

Re: is parting out worth it ?

It just takes sooooooooooo much time to take stuff apart on these old trucks without doing damage sometimes that I almost don't think it's worth it.

Re: is parting out worth it ?

I've parted out several trucks over the years. I'm here in the salt belt and that's the only way some of them have been worth anything. I usually make quite a bit more that way compared to selling them whole. I admit with scrap up it really helped even the profit on the stuff that was to rusted. But as others said it takes a whole lot of time. Just my $.02. Jason

Re: is parting out worth it ?

VTBlazer is right. I just sold a 1958 Triumph tr3 body, frame, engine, and a pile of junk. I listed it on Craigslist, and a couple of other places. I had a few calls about what do you want for the engine. I priced it the same as the whole lot. It was all or nothing, as I did not want to be walking around the pile of undesireables.
