Not Idling

1966 chevy truck 350 engine two barrel very old. It won't stay running you have to keep pumping the gas or it dies.

Re: Not Idling

You need a choke!
Choke gives you a richer mixture.
Won’t idle because it’s too lean.

What’s on it now?
A pic would help of the choke side.

Need more information. Won't idle when cold, or after warmed up? Timing and ignition components in good shape and working properly? Is the gas fresh? Has it been sitting for a long time? etc.

Re: Not Idling

Won't even stay running unless you keep pumping the gas cold or hot. Not just at idle

Every thing is new only 10 thousand on the motor but will check the timing.

Fresh gas just filled up we use the truck every day. It ran great yesterday just started doing it this morning.

The carb is old and it was a rebuild

That info says ‘big vacuum leak’!

Re: Not Idling

You say the carb is old, that is the first thing I would suspect if ignition and timing check out. Might be the accelerator pump or needle and seat. The fact you can keep it running by goosing the throttle steers me away from the fuel pump. Have you checked the plugs to see how they look? Might be fouled?

If all of those things check out, I'd probably pull the carb and toss a rebuild kit into it. Modern fuel is murder on old carbs...

Re: Not Idling

Thanks Bushman

That is what I was thinking and I have wanted to put a 4 barrel on it for some time I have the intake but not the carb. I took it to the garage I use a lot and they are going to make the change for me. I didn't want to do it myself just to busy right now.

I appreciate all the help here on the forum

Re: Not Idling

Check for vacuum leaks. Sometimes carbs come loose.

Re: Not Idling

New motor with old carb? I would get the carb rebuilt or buy a new one. It may not be the problem but why run a new motor with an old carb.

Re: Not Idling

He didn't say the carb was rebuilt. He said the carb was really old and was a rebuild. It sounds to me like he is saying it was a rebuild carb that he has had for a very long time.

Re: Not Idling

I wonder if it's still running points. Those usually need some attention.

Sounds like its a mute point at this time since he is changing the intake and going with a 4 barrel carb. He has the intake but not the carb and the vehicle is already at the garage he uses alot
