MAKE your truck surface rust?

ok,now this is going to sound quite a bit weird.
im rat rodding my 1967 lwb 1/2ton.

it has been gone over with some uglyy red primer,not a good job at all its streaked everywhere and looks like immature kids got to it and tried it or soemthing.

im trying to get a natural surface rust look.
before this truck was painted,i knew it was white with a ton of surface rust,exactly what i need now.
once i get rust yea il do a clear coat or whatever to make it not rust anymore.

uhm

how do i get all this red primer off?
and once off,get it to evenly get hints of surface rust.?
i hate it

you can't paint/clear over rust to stop it.
That's the bad part about this new fad, is that to look cool, your truck has to be rotting away.

I found a product a while back that is a high iron paint and you can then paint on a rust activator that will rust the iron in the paint. This is not the link I was thinking of but the only one I could find. If I find the one I was thinking of I will post back here.

In the link I was referring to they sell a clearcoat that stops that rust at the point that you apply it, or so they say.

I think I remember reading that there is a primer that you put on before the iron paint that supposedly keeps the rust from getting to the sheetmetal. Never tried any of this so this is just what I have read.

I found a 79 datson bulletside on mautofied.com that was soda blasted to bare metal then clear etched primered and gloss clear over the metal or something. If you go to the web site and search for it I'm sure you could email the guy to get some pointers from him. You should also check out the truck too, it's a HEAVILY modified truck that stands 39 inches tall when completly layed out.

Ive seen/heard of it being done. No idea on how or what product to use. I remember it being some sort of acid product. Looked pretty cool. Good luck on trying to find it out. Im interested.

There was someone here who made his truck surface rust on purpose and didn't get very nice comments. Can't remember his screen name though.

Some people dig and some don't. The way I look at it is it's my truck and I can do what I want with it. Now if I ask for comments then I shouldn't care what people say. I don't think I would ever waste good sheetmetal by intentionally rusting it though. I would use some kind of product like I mentioned above.

BTW...I do remember that hotrod that was painted to look like it was patina'd. Cool ride.

As hokey as it sounds, that's what I would do if I really wanted that look. One day the trend is going to be over. A fresh paint job and presto, no more rust.

i would def not let my truck rust on purpose. thats just stupid imo. eventually, your gonna have to fix or replace everything you let sit. i would like to see some pics of that iron paint thing though, it sounds kinda cool. wouldnt mind having a "paint job" like that

all you have to do is sand it down to bare metal. Get some Muriatic acid at Lowes or wherever. Put the truck in the garage. dump the acid in some contianers and leave it. Any oxidizer will do but Muriatic is cheap.
When tired of it we will be more than happy to repaint it when the fad is over it just adds to the cost of repainting

This has been on my mind for quite some time. I know the "patina" look is in for some and looks cool. I was thinking of doing this til I get ready ($) to paint mine. Thing is that I don't want it to rust through while I have the look. If it cost the same for it as a glossy paint< I'm not going to bother. Also thought about just sandin it all down, gettin rid of the rust, and leaving it in primer for a bit. Cnut

I never get mixed or bad remarks about my "patina" that I hear anyway. All I hear is "dont ever paint that truck"! Easiest way I found is take a sander, sand paper and block, scotchbrite, brillo pad etc. to the primer thats existing. Find what texture works best for the look you want. Not like your gonna mess anything up that cant be fixed or changed. Take some areas down to bare metal, spray down with water and let rust. Rust will come eventually. Cheap and easy. Heres a couple pics of mine.

Heres a pic of my club members Mazda he painted to look patina'd. Sounds like your truck could come out similar to this if you sand it down heavier in some areas and lighter in others.

What he is saying is you don't have to put the acid on the truck. The fumes from the acid will cause any exposed metal to rust.

If you want "the look" you need to try to emulate what the sun does to the paint. On the areas that are exposed most to the sun, such as the roof, hood, tops of fenders, lightly wet sand until you start to see metal exposed. This will quickly rust, and give the weathered or "patina" look.
