Any value in a 283 that hasn't been run in 2 years but turns freely. I think I can get it for under $100 and didn't know if that would be worth it or not.

My pops had a 283 in a malibu. The engine screemed and you could not blow it up, believe me I tried (damn kids), It would float the valves. Not much HP or TQ but it ran great.

my first 67-72 was a 67 short stepper with a 283 and 3spd on the floor "converted" i could tach it up to 8 grand all of the time and it wouldn't blow. i would float the valves so bad sometimes that it would stutter for a minute and stall. i'd give it a minute and it would fire right up and go on about it's business. 283 and 327's are one of the best engines i've ever owned. i don't know if i'd sink alot of $$$ into building the 283. if it runs it is well worth it.

Yes, it's well worth the money. They are getting harder to come by, I had four of them at one time and wish that I had kept at least two of them. Like said, they will run forever!!

A 283, a small carb, light in weight vehicle, and you have a $3.00 a gallon DD.

I have a '64 Chevelle 283 block in my '57 2dr sedan. Running stock '57 dual four set up (Carter WCFB carbs) and a Muncie M-21 4 speed. Hyd. cam and 3:55 rear gears. VERY quick and respectable on the street. Have to agree with the statement of the 283 and 327 engines being some of the best ones ever built. That short stroke on the 283 gives RPM's really quick. Considered "old school" by today's standards but then, so am I !

i just put a 305 and 2004r in my 74 C10 DD and since i didnt build the engine i have toyed with the idea of a mild 283 bottom end, and 305 heads in front of an 200 or 700 4r, for a nice dd truck that should get around 20 mpg highway if tuned right... id scoop on it for 100 bucks... keep in mind that that most of the early heads dont have accessory bolt holes so you may have to score later heads...

I can't say enough good things about the 283,I had the same engine in both of my first two vehicles (68 imp,66 1/2 ton with granny gears) and it survived all I could throw at it.

Rick -if you want another, when your up here, I know where one is out of a 61 Impala that can be had for probably that much and it runs. I drove one 5 years in a 66 pickup. Great little engine. I have one in a 61 Belair, but it will be leaving if I ever finish that car.

Got one in my '67 stepside...just keeps on running and it still has 145 psi compression.

This is good to hear. I just picked up a 68 K20 with a good running 283. I bought the truck for the front clip. Compression is a pretty steady 153psi.

All of my current ventures will be BBC.

I still have a "virgin" '64 block, & 2 standard/standard steel cranks, & 1 extra set of 327sj rods packed in grease......just caint afford the blower to go on top, so i can cut a hole in the hood, & stuff it in my longhorn. 283's were born to rev, i could not kill the last 1, even after 100,000 mi of abuse......good stuff Maynerd
