Vin numbers

I just went down to my local dmv office to get clarification on what they need for me to title my truck. I need to know where to find the numbers on the frame. I found a bunch of numbers(looks like a part number) , stamped into the side of the frame, but have not found any others. ie at steering box location . The numbers on the side are not even close(don't have a ce or model number within them). I'am i just blind are not looking hard enough?

Re: Vin numbers

Isn't there a metal tag riveted to the door opening? It won't have 17 digits, just in case someone at your registration agency is looking for that specific amount of characters for a VIN.

Re: Vin numbers

Ya , I've got the metal tag on the cab , but they are asking for a second location( like on the dash board in my chevelle or firewall) I thought the frame is supposed to have an id stamped on it as well.

Re: Vin numbers

It's like they don't believe you or the tag, right? Can you have the RCMP to verify the VIN and have it satisfy the DMV? Seems to me that having them to certify the VIN would be better than asking you to search the haystack for a needle....

Re: Vin numbers

It's just with all the scandals going on up here with icbc's own chop shop stuff, they are now making stuff harder.I just wish i could find the vin on the frame...it would make life so much easier. If it had been a vehicle that was ready for inspections when it came across the line , i would have all this sorted out. I'am doing a running gear restoration on it and leaving the body alone for now but, i'am a bit hesitant to drop 4 k into making it pass inspections only to be denined at registration time..

Re: Vin numbers

If the SPID (option sheet) is still inj the glove box, then it'll be listed on there, but that is the ONLY other location for a FULL vin... the door jamb and the SPID.
On the frame rail by the gear box is a partial VIN, last 8 or so, but, sometimes it just isn't there. I was shocked when I removed all the grime and paint on the front of my suburban's frame and found no numbers there.

Re: Vin numbers

Take them a copy of the original service manual (order it if you don't have it)

it has a section on VIN's for the models covered... it's on the plate riveted in the door jamb and the SPID decal on the glove box.

Re: Vin numbers

Ya thats a good idea , i have the original glove box door...i've been cleaning my frame as well but i'll go take a look by the tranny. I hate to say it( because it involves a auto maker i don't really like care for) but the blue oval cars( ie mustangs and cougar and such) have vins stamped all over the car, in the inner fender lips sub frame rails ...well if they don't like it i guess i'll have another parts vehicle...

Re: Vin numbers

honestly, in a nonconfrontal way, I would tell them to locate another VIN there self.
Under no law or ordinance should you be required to provide, more than what the company provided you with.
If a complete VIN is only in 2 locations, and you have them both, then what's the problem.

Re: Vin numbers

it's not on the side, it's on the top of the frame rail where the steering box is located.

Re: Vin numbers

that upside down number is the part number if I'm no mistaken. I know for a fact it is on my one ton (I goggled the # and it came up as exactly that, P/N for a 68 - 70 one ton chevy frame... go figure!)
Your frame looks just like mine in that gear box location.
I have also seen a partial vin under the cab on the passenger side... but here's the catch... it's on top of the frame. You'll have to remove the cab to clean and search.
I would go to them, not mention the fact that 99% of them had frame numbers... just tell them that the only numbers you can find are on the VIN tag and the SPID.
If your VIN tag is held on with original rivits, i would point that out to them too (rose bud rivits, shaped like a flower instead of round) If it has the wrong rivits, I would keep my mouth shut.

Re: Vin numbers

You should also have the last part of the VIN on the top of the driver's side frame rail about halfway between the front and rear cab mounts. My 70 had it there, but not on the frame by the steering box. The 69 had it in both places. But like Andy mentioned earlier it is not the full VIN, just the sequence # (I guess) for the VIN

palf is correct, it is on the drivers side... sorry about that.
As soon as I saw his post, I remember commenting that both stampings were on the same frame rail.

Re: Vin numbers

no worrries longhorn, if i could just feel it and know it's there.....i"ll make them come up with a way to prove it wrong. I know almost 99% that the truck has never been apart or rebodied so,i'am some what sure that the stupid numbers will match. Hell the thing had to go through a clearance when it came across the border, they checked title and if there are liens and such.

Re: Vin numbers

Didja get the issue resolved?

I found my data on the top of the frame rail, drivers side, just past the steering box going towards the firewall. It wasn't the complete VIN, but was "9S81...., which was just what the VIN showed on the tag and on my title and the SPID. Apparently, there are also numbers on the lower end of the right side frame rail, on the side.
