Having problems lining up the pulleys

I'm having my brother-in-law put the motor/tranny in my '68 stepper and we are having some issues. The motor is a 307 originally from a '70 (I think) fleetside, the guy I bought the motor from snagged the water pump (I can't complain I paid $20 for a running 307). The problem is that the crank/water pump/alt pulleys aren't lining up. I think the first problem was that the water pump we tried was a corvette (1/4 inch shorter than the reg which is about right since it was about half a belt off). But now he says he swapped pumps and its still off. Any Ideas? This guy has 30ish years turning wrenches professionally so its not lack of knowledge. I'm just looking to see if there is a trick we might be missing?

Man you can get into a hornets nest when it comes to mixing and matching pulleys. I dont know all the configurations and if you throw in 73+pulleys it just complicates things. I know there is a short water pump and a long and the pulleys dont all enterchange. I suggest look for a motor that has a simular set up to yours and measure and match the pulleys.

Agreed, you can have short or long water pumps and the pulleys are different between those two. You really can't mix and match. Everything (pump, pulleys, brackets) needs to be either short or long pump style.

Yup, I learned all that crap the hard way when I installed my vintage air A/C kit and I tried to mix and match stuff, ended up getting a short water pump and all short WP pulleys as even the pulleys are different. You can click my vintage air install thread in my signature so see some of what I had to do. Read posts 9, 10 and 11 and check out the pics in that thread.

Re: Having problems lining up the pulleys

The 67-72 small block v8 trucks all used a short water pump. If you have any local salvage yards, look for a 67-72 chev-gmc and the altinator will be on the drivers side with the short water pump. Grab the pulleys and you should be good to go.

Re: Having problems lining up the pulleys

Wow i worked on this today.
yeah i have the same issue on my 69, motor is 84 or somthing...

From the crank pumps in about a 1/4 i used some 1/8 washers to get it closer since im not using a mech fan. and that got the alternator, waterpump crank fairly lined up. now my issue is that my power steering is 1/4" tucked behind the crank pully.

i got a complete set of pullies on my big blouck (serpentine) im gonna give them all a look over see if i can make somthing work there. ill keep you posted.
