Lets fight the gas companies!
Guys,
Kind of a long post but read through it, the guy may have a good idea here. Larry Subject: Gas Prices > > I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us! Now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town.(California) Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50-$1.75,we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocket book WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one),EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! . .If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!. . Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... well,let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am... so trust me on this one.) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you? Acting together we can make a difference.If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. That's a good idea, but we CAN'T reach all 300 million people in America. There are kids, old people, homeless people, mentally handicapped, people in institutions, etc. But I don't think it would take all 300 million. I'm already doing my part. I only go to Diamond Shamrock.

Have you ever concidered how much a gallon of milk is compaired to a gallon of gas. Or how about 12 oz of bottled water for $1. In Eroupe Gas is $4-$5 a gallon. Its a good idea but I doubt if it will work. I promise not to buy from Exxon/Mobil, I work for Chevrontexaco R&D Figuer I'll catch Hell for it but hey they pay WELL

Oh, it is the old $3 a gallon scare. Didn't we see this same thing last year? I hate to say it because I am going to catch a lot of grief, but we Americans are wasteful and sooner or later we are going to pay for it. No one wants to conserve fuel. I guarantee that if fuel went up to $3 a gallon you would not see so many 9 mpg suv/trucks on the road. But, I seriously doubt gas is going to get much more than it was last year.

When I was a kid, in the good old days, gas was 24.9 Cents and minimum wage was 65 cents an hour. Now minimum wage is $6.50(states vary) so gas less than $2.49 is below inflation.

The price of gas has been the biggest bargain for the past 20 years. When I graduated High School back in 1982 gas was about $1.35 a gallon. It is the same price today! That $1.35 today would be $2.53 in 1982 dollars!

I have two frustrations with the oil companies. First, the way in which they raise and lower prices. Have you noticed that when oil prices go up, pump prices jump up very quickly. When they go down, prices drop nowwhere near as fast. My second beef is what appears to be their industry wide price fixing. In any retail market there are always companies who will attempt to capture your business by lowering prices significantly thereby profitting through volume sales. I am not aware of any oil company operating on that basis. I appears to me that the industry standard is "Lets all sell at this price. There are plenty of consumers out there for all of us" And if I understand federal trade laws, that is an example of price fixing which is illegal.

I was loving it when they were price fixing at 93 cents a gallon...lol. Im not taking the sides of the oil companies, but there are a lot of factors detemining the cost. The Federal Government with there fuel mixture policies have a big effect on supply and demand. If you want to hurt the oild companies, buy a fuel efficient car.

it gives me time to read the paper in the morning and unwind on the way home - sure I sacrifice some time- but we all as americans are moving too fast trying to catch our asses . because we want too much and cant be content with what we have.. so slow down a bit. smell the roses. spend time with the family, sell those new trucks, get out of debt. yo wanna talk about thiefs try on those who offer all the credit cards and ) down pay later. who is in control of your lives ?

That is the biggest crock of Sh!t I have ever heard. Americans burn X amount of gallons of gas a day. If every body in America quit buying gas from exxon tomorrow,there would be no way the "little" gas companys could keep up. So what would they do,they would get their gas from exxon.
All the gas companys are in bed together so you are not going to change anything by changing brands. Exxon has more power in this country than the president. If this country had any sense we would be developing alteritive fuels so we would not be at the mercy of the towelheads. Any vehicle that runs on gas could easily converted to run on alcohol. Brazil has been converting over for years. There are so many factors in this equation that it's mind boggling. Everyone starts yelling at the manufacture. At best there just a middle man. I work at an oil refinery and can't believe the money spent, just in keeping the refinery profitable. Seems like every project costs atleast a million dollars. The last major shutdown (revamp) cost 300 million. Now we have to spend millions more to meet the new EPA emmissions standards. Like some have said the only way to help is to stop using so much fuel. We as Americans are just plain spoiled and have no concept of how good we have it. I'm tired of people *****ing all the time. My 2 cents

Buying your gas from other companies WILL NOT HELP! They all get it from the same regional refineries. You put Cheveron in your tank, it's from the same refinery (ie BP, Montsanto, etc.) as Town Pump. Only the formula/additives are a little different (maybe). One way to help is to Federally standardize the refinery process. That way people in Oregon can buy there gas from anywhere in the nation, not just the 4 refineries in California.

Well, I have to go with the ethanol/alcohol plan. American Farmers are struggling and this would help them in a big way. They have the technology and the ability to produce large amounts but have been kept from begining mass production of ethanol by the oil companies.

Y'all are probably going to laugh at me....but. I do my part. I HATE imports, as I bet most of you do too, but I drive a Honda Insight as my daily driver. Why? Well, because it gets from point A to point B at 70mpg. When I bought it I thought this is going to take a lot of getting used to, but it really isn't that bad. I get in the truck when I want to have fun/work/play. But to go to work every day (a 140 mile round trip commute for me) I drive the little go cart. I agree that this is the best way to fix the gas problems, get more gas friendly cars. Now, I am not say we need to throw away our trucks, God forbid, but for driving to work and back, go get an old cavalier, and pick up close to 20 mpg right off.....

Yep my wife drives about 60 miles,was driving a 10mpg Suburban then Pickup,we did the smart thing and bought a Nissan,gets filled up once a week,my tuck was everyother day,that sucks.but its more fun to drive-you wanna pass you dont have to struggle and hope you make it,you passem all with ease.people look like wow look how fast that old junk goes!!!

Y'all want to know what is hurting gas prices? It's those outrageous taxes. They range from 30-55 cents a gallon. That's ridiculous. California has a 45.5 cent tax on every gallon of gasoline you buy. Here in Texas it's 38.3. Go here to check out what your state's is: http://www.energy.ca.gov/fuels/gasol..._by_state.html
Also, we've been able to find a huge oil reserve in the Gulf of Mexico within the last year or so. If the Democrats will allow us to drill it, we won't have anywhere near the dependence on the rag-heads. Quote:

That right find more to burn instead of conserving. What happens when that runs out? Wait until China's demand for oil increases in the next ten years! You will really be paying for gas.
