Front A-Arm Mounting Stud Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I posted this in XXL's crossmember post.

What did you guys come up with on the upper A arm mounting studs? I know that the upper arms on the '80+ trucks had a beveled washer that fit into the inside of the upper a arm.

But something I noticed, where the a arm mounting stud comes through the frame it has a washer that is beveled outward. A flat shim couldn't sit flat against something like this?

The '80+ trucks have a flat spacer that is agains the frame. Now I can see how this would work properly as it is a flat surface for the shims to sit against. Did the early trucks have 1 more piece that sat against the beveled spacer against the frame?

Not totally sure what you asking but the beveled washer are for stacking. So the outer most one will have the flat and be concave on the inside to match the beveled one closes in. This is so you dont have to use as many shims. Only need if you have taller springs. If you used lowering springs go with the one flat on both sides washer.

I'm a little confused by what you said. The washer shown is pressed onto the mounting stud so It is there permanently. The old trucks have a rounded washer that I cannot understand. How would a flat shim sit against a rounded washer?

The newer trucks now use a flat washer pressed onto the stud. That way the shims can sit up against it properly.

What am I missing?

You have to find the matching washer that is flat on one side and concave on the other. The flat would go towards the a arm side. So you will have 2 washer on each stud

I have the concave washer that fits against the upper control arm already. Its the side against the frame that I don't understand.

That is what I was wondering. Where does a person find these? Do they even exist?

They do exist, I just bought an A-arm used from another board member.
He sent me the studs with it, and it has 4 spacers total.
2 concave outward, like shown in your pic. + 2 concave inward that when put together then you have a flat surface for the shims to set on.

I don't think my truck originally had the second spacer on there, if it did I don't remember. I think the shims were stacked against the concave outward one. Not a good idea I don't think. When I put it back together, I'll use both spacers and shim against the flat.

I looked thru a couple vendor catalogs and don't see the spacers sold anywhere?
