Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

What are the differences between the front driveshaft from a 69 with a Dana 20 Transfer case and one for a 72 with an NP205/Dana 44 axle? My 72 K5 NP205/D44 is missing the front shaft and didn’t know if one from a 69 Dana 20 TC would work.

Re: Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

Really? 24 views at this time, and nobody can tell me if the driveshafts are the same, or at least compatible?

Re: Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

I'm pretty confident the u-joints will be the same. Gonna be an issue of length which will take some measuring. My K5 came with a Dana 20 but it was gone when I bought the K5. The front driveshaft was gone too. I swapped in a NP205 and somewhere I have measurements of the driveshaft I had made.

Remind me, is the K5 that you need to put the driveshaft in lifted?

I will try to dig them up for you so you can compare, but my driveshaft was measured/built for a 4" lift.

Re: Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

Here's the thread I started a while back but it sure is confusing when I re-read it. I would be happy to get you measurements this evening of my K5's driveshaft installed with the 4 speed, NP205 and 4" lift.

As a side note, when I swapped in the NP205 in place of the Dana 20, I found the transfer case crossmembers must be different. I had to add 1" spacers to drop the Dana 20's crossmember down to be able to fit the NP205 in place.

Re: Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

Yukon,I would appreciate the measurements with the 205 and 4 " lift.I dont have my stock one ready to go on but I would like to know that it will work or if I should go ahead and have it lenghtened now.
As for the dana d shaft length....I dont know.I know the Rockwell T case uses a different length shaft but it will bolt on to a 205,just not long enough....

Re: Front drive shaft - NP205 / Dana 20

Thanks guys.

Yukon, you brought up a good point. My K5 is lifted 6 inches so if the Dana shaft is longer, that would probably be perfect. I found one online that I am thinking about buying so I don't have it in my hand to measure or anything.
