electric cooling fan question

ok guys,i know there has been a lot of discussion about these,i have 2 12" cooling fans mounted on a shroud,i also have a thermostat switch that autimatically turns them on when the water in the radiator reaches 180 degrees, and then they shut off when the water in the radiator reaches below 180 degrees, which is not for several minutes after the truck is off, now,my question is,is it better this way,or to just wire them in so they turn on when the truck is started and they shut off when ui turn off the truck,or is it better the way i have them now,im just curious,i have a lot invested in my truck, and this is my first time w/ electric fans,i just didn't notice alot of movement in my temperature guage when i took it for its first road trip to get the bed done, any and all help will be much appreciated.thanx...mike

I have electric fans on everything we own (except for my tractor ). They are all flex a lite units and they all run for a short period after the switch has been turned off. I really don't think that they run anywhere near as long as you say yours does. I think that you would be fine having the fan stop when you turn off the switch. After all if you had a mechanical fan it would stop when the switch was turned off regardless of the temp.

If the truck is not over heating when you kill the switch I wouldn't think the fan would need to continue to run. After all the only coolant that you are cooling is what is in the core due to a lack of circulation ( engine not running ).

My Flex A Lite thermostat went out just over a year old. If you do not have the manual on switch installed you may want to or just make a jumper wire to run the fans off of the key. I was lucky when mine gave up the ghost, in the driveway. I now have a backup manual on connection opporated by my key if it goes out again.

Wire it to the ignition switch. This way if the relay goes bad, nothing will happen untill you hit the ignition. Sometimes the relay will short out internally and your fans will stay on all night...or untill your battery dies, which ever comes first.
If you notice, all the new cars have it wired this way.
