VIN search

Has anyone out there ever contacted GM with their Vin # to see exactly the build info on their truck? I contacted GM Canada a few years back to see if a truck I was looking to by was in fact, a true big block truck, They said they could give some specific info over the phone and then send me the Build sheet info for the truck. However they had no files on US trucks that was a different division of GM. It was going to cost about 65 or 70 dollars if I remember right??? Does anyone know of this in the States?

Thanks

Curt

The GM canada search and info for a Canadian sold truck is very accurate. I've seen them, list all options ordered , dealer that sold it, paint colors...etc.

Lazy b@stards down here can't even ID a truck by it's VIN.
And there is no way to tell by the VIN (not in US anyways) if it is a big block or not. The VIn and model number tells very little about a truck.

Vin's

So Andy...... Do you mean to say that if someone is selling a so called "numbers matching" Big Block truck from the States that there is no way to prove it without the original Build sheet, or Protecto plate? Or original glove box sticker option sheet?

Pretty much...
There are the VIN numbers (last 7 numbers or so) that were stamped on the engine, but they stopped that in 69 or so i'm thinking.

Well that is interesting, I guess for alot of us this is kind of positive. This means that our trucks will never be like Corvette's or Chevelle's, in the way that so much is put on just the numbers. This is also good for most of us because, the majority of us do have slightly modified trucks whether it is a color change or maybe you changed your steel bed to wood, or put in a Tach ECT.. It is nice to know for our sake that the value of our rigs is based on the truck itself and not numbers. Dont get me wrong, I would like a #'s matching 67 Chevelle 396, but the truth is, we all can love the fact that providing the changes are tastefully done, that it will not hurt the value of our rides. Just my opinion.

iot can be a 63 vette vert it can be a 69 yenko or baldwin motion nova 427 sc it can be a
72 SS 454 chevelle , it doesnt matter,
if it was built in the US then you ar screwed and its up to you to find out with the body cowl tag and frame numbers and engine stamping codes whether the car is fake/clone/stolen/homemade or the like

GM of America did not keep records.
