Help Removing a cab? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am about to pull the cab on a 69 chevy truck. What am I in for? no seats in cab and no front end on truck. What wrenches, ie sizes, will I need and are there any good tips to removing it.

Will I be able to lift it with one other guy or should I have a few others? If so how many?

IIRC there are four bolts that hold the cab on the truck right?

There are 4 bolts. 2 go in from underneath at the back of the cab. The other 2 are in the front floorboards. The rear 2 will come right out. The front 2 you will need to hold a wrench on one side while turning the other. I used 4 people to lift my cab and move it very easily. My cab was empty ( no doors, glass, wiring, etc. I believe the rear bolts were 5/8 and the fronts were either 13/16 or 7/8. Here is a pic of what my cab looked like when we removed it.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE!
I was lucky I Didnt get hurt last year I was parting out a 2wd 67 small window alone and thought I could just pull the cab off with the engine hoist. The cab lifted off the frame fine but as soon as i tried to move it the hoist and cab tipped over just about squashing me.
BTW it wrecked my rust free small window cab

I removed my cab single handed with only a bottle jack and some scrap lumber. Raised it up off of the frame with the jack, one end at a time, and placed 2 planks under it. Then slid it off onto the ground. The rockers were a little bent up but I didnt care since I was going to replace them anyway.

A stripped cab weighs right at 500 pounds... work acordingly.

I took my cab off myself using planks. It can be done safely if planned and done slowly. Also a cab could be taken off quite easily with 4 or 5 guys, that is probly the safest way.

wow cool info as i am also going to be removeing my cab but not all the way off i am only removeing it so i can weld in a new front floor support i will be lifting it up tilting it back and laying it across some 2x6 planks i just need to find four or five guys to do it for me hehehehe i pay with beer. any takers hehehe?

laying it on it's back isn't a good idea. Even if you protect the back wall from damage, the firewall is so heavy it can distort the door opening. If you were to make a brace from the hinges to the striker, it'll help, but the posability of damage is still there. Esp if you have rotted rockers.
